GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Tony Gwynn doubled twice and Hideki Irabu lost in his first game at San Diego as the Padres rallied past the Montreal Expos 6-2 Friday night. Gwynn, who left in the fifth inning Wednesday night when he stumbled legging out a double, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. With 529 doubles, he tied Al Oliver for 23rd on the career list. Padres starter Sterling Hitchcock left in the fifth inning after straining his left elbow. His status was unclear and he was due to be examined Saturday. Irabu (2-4) refused to sign with the Padres after they acquired him from a Japanese team in 1997, forcing a trade to the New York Yankees. He was booed during introductions and his two plate appearances. Irabu, acquired by the Expos from New York during the offseason, defeated San Diego on April 9 at Montreal. This time, he allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings. Hitchcock, just 1-4 in seven appearances against the Expos, gave two runs and six hits in four-plus innings. Matt Whiteside (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings and Brian Boehringer, bothered for much of the season by a right shoulder strain, made his first appearance since April 21. With the score 2-all in the third, Gwynn doubled to tie Cap Anson and Frank Robinson for 24th place, then scored on a grounder by Ryan Klesko, who agreed earlier in the day to an $18.75 million, three-year contract extension through 2004, Eric Owens' RBI single and Al Martin's sacrifice fly made it 5-2 in the fourth, and Dave Magadan added an RBI single in the eighth. Montreal took a 2-0 lead in the first on doubles by Geoff Blum, Rondell White and Jose Vidro. San Diego tied it in the bottom half on RBI singles by Klesko and Boone. Whiteside replaced Hitchcock with a 3-1 count on Blum with no outs and one on in the fifth. Blum walked and Whiteside threw a wild pitch, but Whiteside retired his next three batters. Notes: Vidro is 7-for-16 against the Padres this season. ... San Diego SS Damian Jackson has six errors in five games.
