Karros ties Dodgers' career HR mark

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- When Eric Karros was growing up in San Diego in the 1970s, he was a Cincinnati Reds fan and hated the Dodgers. Now he owns a share of the record for most home runs hit by a Dodger in Los Angeles.

"I was in the minority in my household because my dad and my brother were huge Dodger fans," Karros said after hitting his 228th career homer in Saturday night's 7-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

"So I was very aware of what those guys accomplished in the '70s with Ron Cey, Steve Garvey and Billy Russell and Don Sutton. They were very familiar names in our household."

Karros' sixth-inning solo homer was his 17th of the season. He reached Cey's total in his 4,669th career at-bat, 547 fewer than the former All-Star third baseman needed.

Karros, who has spent his entire career with Los Angeles, drove a 1-1 pitch from reliever Scott Service into the lower seats in the left-field corner with two outs for a 7-1 lead.

"I don't want to say it was inevitable, but I had four years (on his current contract) to do it," Karros said. "When I look back on my career and some of the things I've been able to do, I'll probably have a greater appreciation for it.

"I mean, it's great to be mentioned in the same breath as a Ron Cey, but I want to mentioned in the same breath with them when they're talking about World Series championships."

Shawn Green homered and drove in three runs and Kevin Brown (5-2) pitched a seven-hitter en route to his third complete game of the season and second in a row.

Brown, who has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his 12 outings this year, went the distance for the eighth time in 47 starts with the Dodgers.

The right-hander was staked to a 6-0 lead before giving up Jason Giambi's RBI single in the sixth inning and Eric Chavez's ninth homer in the seventh.

"I've played with some pretty good offensive teams in Texas and Florida, but we've definitely put some numbers up this year," Brown said. "I think we've got a very balanced lineup and are pretty strong from top to bottom -- and we've still got some guys injured. So when we get those guys healthy, we'll be in even better shape."

Omar Olivares (3-8) lost for the fifth time in as many starts, after giving up three runs in the first inning. Olivares, who is tied for the most losses in the majors, allowed six runs and nine hits in six innings.

"We need him for the long haul. But if he continues to go the way he's going, we're going to have to do something about it and take a long hard look at him," manager Art Howe said. "But the main this is we do need him, and we need him pitching better."

F.P. Santangelo led off the first with a single, Mark Grudzielanek doubled inside first base and Gary Sheffield delivered both runners with a double off the fence in right-center. Green then looped a broken-bat RBI double inside the left-field line.

The Dodgers made it 4-0 in the third on a two-out walk to Chad Kreuter and singles by Alex Cora and Brown, who leads Dodgers pitchers with three RBIs in 24 at-bats.

Olivares walked Sheffield with one out in the fourth before surrendering Green's 11th homer, a towering drive to right-center that made it 6-0. Oakland was the only American League team Green did not homer against last season, when he hit a career-high 42 for the Toronto Blue Jays.

"They were the team I disliked to face more than any other team," Green said. "They pitched me tough last year. They have a good knack of working both sides of the plate. They really work that inside corner and then throw a lot of slow stuff away. So it's always a battle to face them."

Game notes
Including Olivares' third-inning single, Oakland pitchers are 4-for-51 at the plate since interleague play began in 1997. ... Giambi was hit by a pitch in the first inning, he became the first batter plunked by Brown this season and the 37th by Dodger pitchers -- the most in the majors.
