GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- With four swings of the bat, the Los Angeles
Dodgers erased the San Diego Padres' five-run lead.
Todd Hundley hit a tying three-run homer in the sixth and Eric
Karros a game-winning two-run shot in the eighth as the Los Angeles
Dodgers rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the San Diego
Padres 7-5 Wednesday night.
| | Dodgers second baseman Mark Grudzielanek (8) can't make the tag on Carlos Hernandez, who steals second on the front end of a double steal. |
All of the Dodgers' runs came on homers. Karros downplayed his
shot, saying Hundley's was the important one.
"He's got to be in the lineup every day, that's just the bottom
line," Karros said. "What he provides for this offense, you know,
that's not taking anything away from Chad (Kreuter), but Hundley
can turn the game around with one swing. He can do it in any
at-bat."
Opposing pitchers will see a lot of Hundley. Kreuter dropped an
appeal of his eight-game suspension for brawling with Wrigley Field
fans, effective Wednesday night, so Hundley will get five straight
starts before the All-Star break and three afterward.
"He makes this offense a lot different when he's in the
lineup," Karros said. "We have four guys with a chance to hurt
you, and very rarely is a pitcher going to go through all four guys
without making a mistake.."
Starting pitcher Darren Dreifort started Los Angeles' comeback
with a solo homer in the fifth, but didn't get the decision. That
went to Antonio Osuna (1-4), who pitched two scoreless innings.
With the Dodgers trailing 5-2, Padres rookie starter Brian
Tollberg walked Shawn Green leading off the sixth and made way for
Carlos Reyes, who walked Karros and gave up Hundley's three-run
homer that tied it at 5.
Green hit a leadoff single in the eighth off Matt Whiteside
(2-2) and Karros followed with his 24th homer.
"It was just a bad pitch," Whiteside said of his slider. "It
was a cement mixer waiting for someone to happen," he added,
describing the pitch's rotation.
"I'm not taking anything away from him, but 90 percent of the
hitters in the league would have hit that out."
Dreifort's homer was a 407-foot shot off Tollberg into the seats
in left field, the third of his career and first since last Aug. 8
at New York. Mark Grudzielanek homered with two outs in the fifth,
cutting the Padres' lead to 5-2.
Rookie Kory DeHaan hit his first homer and had his first
three-hit game for the Padres. Ryan Klesko accounted for all three
of San Diego's runs in the first inning, hitting a two-run double
down the right-field line and scoring with two outs on the back end
of a double steal.
DeHaan singled in his first two at-bats before hitting an
opposite field homer off Dreifort with two outs in the fourth for a
5-0 lead.
Tollberg, who won his first two starts, lasted just five innings
for the second straight start. He allowed three runs and seven
hits.
Dreifort remained 0-5 lifetime against the Padres. He gave up
five runs and 10 hits in five innings, struck out eight and walked
one.
San Diego opened the first with singles by Al Martin and DeHaan,
with both scoring on Klesko's double. Carlos Hernandez drew a
two-out walk and stole second. Second baseman Grudzielanek fell
down when he fielded the throw from Hundley, allowing Klesko to
score. DeHaan hit an RBI single in the second.
Mike Fetters got his second save in as many chances.
Game notes Hernandez, the Padres' catcher, left after the third with a
mild lower back strain. ... The Dodgers promoted OF Mike Metcalfe
from Triple-A Albuquerque and he started in center, going 0-for-4.
Metcalfe appeared in four games with the Dodgers in 1998. To make
room for Metcalfe, OF Shawn Gilbert was designated for assignment.
... Dodgers RHP Kevin Brown, added to the All-Star team along with
OF Gary Sheffield, had his scheduled start pushed back to Thursday
due to a strained back. ... Closer Trevor Hoffman will be San
Diego's lone All-Star.
