Rekar's rare complete game lifts Devil Rays

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild didn't think twice when he decided to allow Bryan Rekar to pitch the ninth.

Rekar pitched a complete game and Gerald Williams had three hits and three RBIs for the second straight game as the Devil Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 10-3 Friday night for their third consecutive win.

"I thought Bryan was outstanding," Rothschild said. Even when he got in trouble in the eighth, he still had good stuff and got a couple of good hitters out to end that inning."

Rekar (4-6) allowed eight hits in the third complete game of his career, his first since Aug. 18, 1998. He struck out four and walked two.

"He pitched very well," Kansas City manager Tony Muser said. "He had pop on his fastball. He was sneaky and had good command of both sides of the plate."

Rekar had thrown only 63 pitches through six innings and finished with 111 pitches.

Rothschild felt it was important to let him get a complete game.

"If he had gotten in trouble in the ninth, I would have pulled him," he said. "But it's nice to see him close the deal. He got out a team that has been giving us problems late in the game."

While he did tire, Rekar wanted to stay in the game.

"It was important to get the complete game," he said. "He (Rothschild) asked me if I wanted to stay in the game, and I said, 'Yeah.' "

Blake Stein (1-3) gave up all six runs -- five earned -- and six hits in six innings.

Before the game, the Devil Rays traded outfielder Bubba Trammell and right-hander Rick White to the New York Mets for right-hander Paul Wilson and outfielder Jason Tyner. The Devil Rays then sent right-hander Jim Mecir and a minor leaguer to the Oakland Athletics for minor league right-hander Jesus Colome and a player to be named.

"You have to give up something to get something," Rothschild said.

The Devil Rays took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Williams, Miguel Cairo and Fred McGriff.

Steve Cox hit an RBI grounder in the sixth and Williams hit his career-high 15th homer in the seventh after Felix Martinez reached on Stein's three-base throwing error. Williams has 69 RBIs, also a career high.

Kansas City got runs on Joe Randa's RBI grounder in the fourth and sacrifice flies by Rey Sanchez in the eighth and Todd Dunwoody in the ninth.

Tampa Bay scored four runs in the ninth off Jerry Spradlin on McGriff's RBI single, Jose Guillen's two-run double and Vinny Castilla's sacrifice fly.
