Garcia earns first win since coming off DL

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SEATTLE (AP) -- Freddy Garcia appears to have been rejuvenated by a trip to the disabled list.

Garcia won for the first time in five starts as the Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 to snap a three-game losing streak Friday night.

"Now I feel pretty good," Garcia said. "I feel better than when I got hurt. Before that my arm was a little tired."

Garcia (3-1) gave up four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out a season-high eight batters. Garcia, who missed 2½ months with a broken right leg, had a 1.75 ERA four starts without a decision since coming off the DL on July 7.

"He's throwing well," Mariners center fielder Mike Cameron said. "He's got his slider down there low and they were chasing it. Plus, he got out of a couple of jams."

The Blue Jays took a 4-3 lead behind Jose Cruz Jr.'s three-run homer in the third inning before the Mariners rallied with three runs in the fourth inning.

"It's been a while since he's won," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said of Garcia's first victory since April 16. "He's done well in all the games he's pitched since he's come back. He made just one mistake in the third, and he shut them down the rest of the way."

Rickey Henderson and Mark McLemore led off the inning with singles off Chris Carpenter (7-10). A one-out walk to Edgar Martinez loaded the bases and knocked out Carpenter, who lost for the fifth time in last six decisions.

"Once again I've struggled and battled with my control and my fastball," said Carpenter, who has given up 51 earned runs in his last 33 2/3 innings. "I got fortunate and made some good pitches, but I can't walk six guys in three innings and get away with it."

Said Toronto manager Jim Fregosi: "It's been an ongoing problem, (Carpenter) just has not had the command I thought he would. He's battling himself."

Roy Halladay came in and walked John Olerud and hit Jay Buhner with a pitch, giving the Mariners the lead. Mike Cameron's RBI groundout made it 6-4.

Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth for his 25th save in 27 chances, and 15th consecutive save conversion.

The Blue Jays (55-49) fell to third place in AL East, three games behind the Yankees. Seattle's lead in the West moved back to four games over Oakland.

Cruz's 22nd homer and back-to-back doubles by Carlos Delgado and Brad Fullmer gave Toronto a 4-2 lead in the third.

The Mariners closed within one run in their half on a sacrifice fly by Cameron.

Seattle scored twice in the second on RBI singles by Dan Wilson and David Bell.
