Orioles win with sacrifice fly

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DETROIT (AP) -- Ryan Kohlmeier just tried to stick with the basics Monday night.

It worked.

He pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first major league save and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3.

"The phrase we use down (in the minors) is 'It's the same circus, just a bigger tent,' " said Kohlmeier, called up from Triple-A Rochester on July 28. "You just use what got you here."

After Ivanon Coffie's tiebreaking sacrifice in the top of the ninth, the 23-year-old right-hander made his fourth major league appearance and converted his first save opportunity.

He retired Juan Gonzalez on a grounder, struck out Dean Palmer and got Billy McMillon on a grounder.

"Kohlmeier faced the toughest part of the lineup and did the job," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said.

Kohlmeier said he tried to block out the opponent and just made his pitches.

"If I start to think about who I'm facing, Juan Gonzalez, Dean Palmer, whoever, it starts to change how I pitch," he said.

Brady Anderson homered for the Orioles, who have won six of their last nine.

With the score 3-all, Chris Richard led off the ninth with a double off Doug Brocail (5-4) and advanced on Brook Fordyce's groundout. Coffie then lifted a fly to center that was just deep enough to score Richard.

"If you draw it up, you couldn't do any better," Hargrove said.

Buddy Groom (4-3) struck out the only batter he faced, Bobby Higginson in the eighth.

Palmer homered for the Tigers, 1-4 on a seven-game homestand. They stranded 12 runners -- eight in scoring position -- and left the bases full in both the fifth and sixth innings.

"We just didn't put the ball in play with runners in scoring position. We're making a habit of that," Tigers manager Phil Garner said. "Just hit the ball in the center of the diamond. It's just a basic fundamental thing.

"We've gotten out of sync. We're hitting to third base. We should've figured out by now it's not working."

The Tigers are the AL's worst-hitting team with runners in scoring position. That was the No. 1 topic during a postgame team meeting.

"You've got to inside-out the ball and try to hit the ball up the middle or the other way. We're not doing that," Tigers outfielder Wendell Magee said. "It's just part of the game. You get in slumps, you go up, you go down. We just have to keep battling and keep working at it, going in the cages and doing what you have to do."

Neither rookie starter figured in the decision.

Orioles left-hander John Parrish, making his third major league start, allowed two runs, eight hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings, leaving with a 3-2 lead.

Detroit right-hander Adam Bernero, making his second major league start and appearance, gave up three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Delino DeShields' RBI single put Baltimore ahead in the third, with Melvin Mora thrown out at the plate by center fielder Juan Encarnacion on the play.

Brad Ausmus' run-scoring grounder tied it in the bottom half, but the Orioles went back ahead in the fourth when Jeff Conine tripled and scored on Fordyce's sacrifice fly, dropped by Encarnacion for a two-base error.

Anderson made it 3-1 with a solo homer in the fifth.

Detroit loaded the bases with two outs in the home half, but Parrish struck out Gonzalez on a 2-2 pitch.

Palmer led off the sixth with his 21st home run, and the Tigers loaded the bases again with one out to knock out Parrish. But Mike Trombley relieved and retired Damion Easley and Ausmus on grounders to third.

McMillon tied it with a pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh off Trombley.

Game notes
The Tigers ran themselves out of the first inning after Easley hit a leadoff single and Ausmus walked. Parrish caught Easley leaning off second and ran him down for the first out, then threw to Mora at shortstop to throw out Ausmus trying to steal. Higginson then walked, but Gonzalez flied out, ending the inning. ... Albert Belle was 0-for-4 and is hitting just .196 (11-for-56) in his last 14 games. ... Richard was 1-for-5 and has hit safely in all seven games since the Orioles obtained him July 29 from St. Louis for Mike Timlin. ... Gonzalez was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts and stranded six runners. He's 1-for-17 during the homestand.
