PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Matt Clement pitched six strong innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 Monday night for their eighth win in nine games. Ruben Rivera and Phil Nevin homered for the Padres, who have won all four of their meetings with the Phillies this season. Clement (11-10) allowed two runs _ one earned _ on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four. Clement started the seventh, but was pulled quickly after Tomas Perez singled and Rob Ducey reached on an error. Carlos Almanzar got two outs, gave up an RBI single to Scott Rolen and struck out Mike Lieberthal to end the inning. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 30th save in 36 opportunities. San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the second on Rivera's homer, his 15th, off Robert Person (5-4). Eric Owens extended the lead with a two-out RBI single. Damian Jackson made it 4-0 with a two-out, two-run triple. Rolen hit his 20th of the season in the sixth to make it 4-1, but Nevin hit a two-run shot _ his 23rd of the season _ in the seventh off Mark Holzemer to give the Padres a five-run lead. Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer off Donne Wall in the ninth to make it 6-4. Clement worked out of jams in the second and third innings. With runners on second and third and one out, Clement got Perez to pop out and struck out Person to end the second. In the third, Travis Lee was hit by a pitch and Pat Burrell singled. Clement settled down and got Marlon Anderson to ground into a double play before Perez ended the threat with a groundout. Person pitched 5 2-3 innings, allowed five hits and four runs. He struck out eight, walked four and retired 10 in a row during one stretch, but remain winless in his last eight starts. Notes: Owens signed a two-year extension through the 2002 season. Terms were not disclosed. ... Of Rivera's 68 hits this season, 31 have gone for extra bases. Last season, 40 of his 80 hits went for extra bases. ... Anderson made his season debut for the Phillies at second base. He went 1-for-3 and made two sensational diving stops to rob Desi Relaford and Mike Darr of hits. ... Person's last win came on May 27 at Los Angeles. ... Rolen has hit 20 or more homers in four consecutive seasons. The last Phillies player to accomplish the feat was Mike Schmidt, who hit 20-plus homers in nine straight seasons from 1978-1987. ... Klesko stole his 18th base of the season. His previous high was six set in 1996. ... Ducey, re-acquired by the Phillies earlier in the day, pinch-hit and was safe on an error in the seventh.
