ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Mark Redman made it look easy. Redman became the first American League rookie to win 10 games this season, giving up four hits in 8 2/3 innings Monday night to lead the Minnesota Twins over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 4-2. "You can't be disappointed," said Redman, who came within one out of his first complete game. "It was a quality start. You just tip your hat and you walk off with your head up. That's all you can do. It's a team game and the bullpen came in and picked me up." Redman (10-5) struck out nine and walked two to win for the fifth time in his last six starts. During the stretch, he has allowed 16 earned runs in 41 innings. After Russ Johnson's second-inning single, the 26-year-old left-hander allowed just one runner in the next six innings. Redman took a two-hitter into the ninth before Greg Vaughn singled, advanced on defensive indifference and scored on Fred McGriff's single. "Their pitcher set the tone," Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild said. "He got ahead of everybody in good spots. He kept the ball down real well and had a real good changeup. You have to give him credit." Redman threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of the 31 hitters he faced. The nine strikeouts equaled his career high. "He had real good command," Tampa Bay's Steve Cox said. "He had it going tonight." Johnson followed with a run-scoring single off LaTroy Hawkins, and Eddie Guardado retired pinch-hitter John Flaherty on a game-ending flyout with runners on first and third for his seventh save in as many chances. Minnesota has won 11 of its last 17, while the Devil Rays lost for just the fourth time in 12 games. Bryan Rekar (4-7) gave up nine hits in his second complete game of the season, pitching at least seven innings for the fourth straight start. "I'm trying to go after them," Rekar said. "Most of the hits they got, I didn't think were hit that hard. I thought they were good pitches." Twins manager Tom Kelly agreed. "We got a little lucky on a couple of our hits," he said. "We broke a few bats and got a few balls to fall in. Rekar pitched a terrific game. It was a real solid ballgame. The pitchers did an outstanding job. It was fun to watch them pitch." Minnesota was just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position the first four innings as it took a 2-0 lead on RBI grounders by Midre Cummings in the first and Jacque Jones in the fourth. Corey Koskie added a two-run homer in the sixth. Tampa Bay's best early chance came in the first when Cairo doubled and Vaughn walked. Redman retired McGriff on a grounder and struck out Jose Guillen. "He was a little shaky the first inning or two, and then he got going pretty good with his changeup and his fastball," Kelly said. "Redman pitched an outstanding game for us." Game notesDevil Rays DH Jose Canseco was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees. "I thought we could have gotten a Twix bar or something," Canseco said before leaving Tropicana Field. "These things happen." ... The Devil Rays recalled OF Quinton McCracken from Triple-A Durham to replace Canseco. ... Cristian Guzman tied a the Twins' team-record held by Rod Carew (1977) in the first inning with his 16th triple of the season. ... Tampa Bay LHP Tony Saunders (broken left arm) gave up one run and one hit in three innings in his second rehab start for Single-A Charleston. ...
