GAME LOG
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox had a championship-caliber comeback. Magglio Ordonez had three RBI, including a go-ahead sacrifice fly, as the White Sox rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-5 Friday night. "Again, they showed great character in fighting back," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "It's never a good time to fall behind 5-0, but the guys battled back. It's a great win for us to come back in that fashion." Ordonez hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to tie the game and gave Chicago the lead with his 11th sacrifice fly of the season in the seventh. Both came after Frank Thomas was intentionally walked. "I can understand the move because of how hot Frank is," Manuel said. "Magglio's a good hitter. That's the reason he's hitting behind Frank. We wouldn't send Frank up there naked, so to speak." The White Sox, who have an AL-best 69-46 record, are 14-14 since the All-Star break. Tampa Bay lost for just the second time in seven games. "Good teams, like that club over there, you know are going to come back, make a run and they did," Devil Rays catcher John Flaherty said. "They have a very good lineup. I made a comment to the umpire, you look up there and everybody has the same kind of numbers ... high batting average and double-digit home runs. They're a tough lineup to pitch to." Mark Buehrle (2-1) got the final out in the sixth inning for the win. Keith Foulke got two outs for his 20th save in 24 chances. The Devil Rays, assisted by four walks, took a 5-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, Jim Parque walked the bottom third of lineup: Russ Johnson, Steve Cox and Felix Martinez. Gerald Williams then knocked in a pair with a single. Miguel Cairo walked to reload the bases. After Greg Vaughn struck out, Fred McGriff cleared the bases with an opposite-field single off the left-field wall. McGriff is 7-for-9 with 18 RBI this season in bases loaded situations. Parque, who threw just 40 of 91 pitches for strikes, lasted 3 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs, three hits, seven walks and hit a batter. "He couldn't seem to find his groove," White Sox catcher Charles Johnson said. "He couldn't find the zone. The main thing is that he kept the game close enough to give us a chance to come back." Six Chicago relievers limited the Devil Rays to three hits over the final 5 1/3 innings. "The bullpen was outstanding," Johnson said. "Everybody did their part. They made pitches when they needed to and got big outs against a ballclub that can really score some runs." The White Sox got two runs back in the third on RBI doubles by Johnson and Jose Valentin. Paul Konerko's solo homer got Chicago within 5-3 in the fourth. Tampa Bay loaded the bases -- on two walks and a hit batter -- with two outs in the fourth, but left fielder Carlos Lee made a running catch on John Flaherty's liner. The Devil Rays were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. "We had our chances," Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild said. "They got back in the game with the two runs in the third and it went down from there." Ordonez's two-run single, which deflected off the glove off a leaping Cairo at second, tied the game at 5 in the fifth. Tampa Bay's Ryan Rupe gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. Paul Wilson (0-1), who allowed Ordonez's sac fly, gave up one run and one hit over three innings.
