Rookie Schoeneweis fans nine to break slump

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Garret Anderson and Mo Vaughn drove in three runs apiece as the Anaheim Angels beat the New York Yankees 8-3 Friday night.

Scott Schoeneweis (6-6) won for only the second time in 13 starts, allowing three runs -- two earned -- and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.

Orlando Palmeiro and Jorge Posada
Orlando Palmeiro gets past New York's Jorge Posada after a two-run double by Mo Vaughn in the first.

Mike Fyhrie relieved Schoeneweis with two on and loaded the bases with a walk to Jose Canseco before retiring Glenallen Hill on a flyout to preserve the Angels' 6-3 lead.

Orlando Hernandez (8-9) had his second unimpressive outing since coming off the disabled list last Sunday, losing for the ninth time in 13 decisions. Hernandez allowed seven runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings.

Trailing 4-0 after one inning, the Yankees closed to 4-3 on Paul O'Neill's RBI single in the third and Bernie Williams' two-run homer in the fifth, his 27th.

But the Angels responded in the bottom half with a two-run double by Anderson.

Darin Erstad, who had three hits, led off the seventh with his major league-leading 180th hit of the season. One out later, Randy Choate came in and Erstad stole second and third. Vaughn's sacrifice fly made it 7-3.

Troy Glaus hit his 32nd homer -- 31 as a third baseman -- in the eighth, breaking Doug DeCinces' club record.

The Angels grabbed the 4-0 lead on Vaughn's two-run double, Anderson's RBI double, and Adam Kennedy's bloop RBI single.

A generous strike zone by umpire Laz Diaz helped Schoeneweis diffuse a Yankee rally in the fourth. After a leadoff walk to Canseco, Hill followed with a drive to right-center that was touched by a fan leaning over the 18-foot-high wall.

Canseco, who had to stay at third, was stranded when Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius were called out on questionable called third strikes, and Luis Sojo followed with a soft liner to short.
