Rockies' Helton raises average to .387

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MONTREAL (AP) -- Larry Walker keeps battling his way through a difficult season.

"I've been fighting through it, trying to stay afloat," he said after his fourth career grand slam helped lead the Colorado Rockies over the Montreal Expos 10-3 Friday night.

Neifi Perez and Michael Barrett
Neifi Perez of the Rockies scores past Expos catcher Michael Barrett (9) on a double by teammate Todd Helton in the third inning Friday.

The homer was just the ninth of the season for Walker, who hit a team-record 49 in 1997.

"Today, I contributed, finally," Walker said. "I haven't been doing it very often so it's good to do it and get a win."

Brian Bohanon homered and pitched seven strong innings and Todd Helton went 2-for-2, including a two-run, first-inning double off Dustin Hermanson, to raise his major league-leading average .387.

Helton, who has 98 RBIs, also walked three times. He is hitting .541 (20-for-37) in August with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs.

Bohanon (6-8), who allowed nine hits and one run, hit his second career homer with two outs in the fourth and added an RBI double in the sixth. He was hitting .080 (2-for-25) with one RBI coming in.

"I've struggled the whole year hitting," he said. "It took me until after the All-Star break to get my first hit. I've been in a little groove lately, the last three or four games, where I'm seeing the ball."

Walker, who played for Montreal from 1989-94, homered later in the inning off Scott Forster for his third slam with the Rockies, his first since May 29, 1998.

"I played here for quite a few years," Walker said. "I'm familiar with the batter's box here. I know what it is. I know everything about the batter's box, the background, the park."

Colorado won for just the 20th time in 68 road games.

Dustin Hermanson (8-10) lost his third straight decision, allowing eight runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings.

"He threw hard," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "His stuff was there, as usual, but his location was off a little bit."

After Colorado took a 2-0 lead on Helton's double in the first, Montreal cut the lead in half on Lee Stevens' RBI single in the third. Vladimir Guerrero took too wide a turn around second on Walker's throw home, and Jose Vidro was thrown out at the plate, ending the inning.

Hermanson struck out Todd Walker and Brent Mayne in the fourth before Bohanon launched a high drive that just cleared the left field wall.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone," Bohanon said. "I hit it on the button and it just felt good."

Run-scoring doubles by Todd Walker and Bohanon made it 5-1 in the six-run sixth.

"Helton's two-run double, that was a big blow," Alou said. "And then the grand slam by Walker put the game away for keeps."

Jose Vidro had a run-scoring single in Montreal's two-run ninth off John Wasdin. Vidro's 71 RBIs are the most by an Expos second baseman, one more than Mike Lansing had in 1997.
