ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The New York Yankees again made it easy
for David Cone.
After going 3½ months without a victory, Cone won for the second
time in a week as the Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 10-2 Tuesday
night.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Gabe Kapler got halfway to Joe DiMaggio,
extending his hitting streak to 28 games with an eighth-inning
single in Tuesday's 10-2 loss to the Yankees.
Kapler, who has the longest hitting streak in the major leagues
this season, was 0-for-3 with three flyouts for Texas before he
bounced a single up the middle against New York reliever
Dwight Gooden.
"I didn't feel too good tonight. I really felt uncomfortable
for the first time in a long time," Kapler said. "I slowed down in
my last at-bat and I was able to get a better look at it."

Cone (3-10) was given a four-run lead before he even threw his
first pitch. He worked five strong innings.
Last Thursday, Cone won for the first time in 16 starts. In that
victory over Oakland, the Yankees opened an early 10-2 lead.
"That last win took a lot of pressure off of me," Cone said.
"I thought I was better than last time out, but I'm getting
better. I'll take them any way I can get them."
David Justice, Scott Brosius and Paul O'Neill all hit long
two-run homers for the Yankees, who have won 10 straight games
against the Rangers, including three in last year's playoffs. New
York has won 39 of the last 50 games between the teams.
Cone shut out Texas on three hits for the first four innings.
The Yankees, meanwhile, were building a 10-0 lead.

Texas broke through when Rusty Greer and Rafael Palmeiro hit
consecutive RBI singles in the fifth.
Cone struck out three, walked one and allowed seven hits. He is
11-3 in 20 career appearances against Texas with a 2.65 ERA.
"It's remarkable how things fall in place when you throw
strikes," manager Joe Torre said. "I took him out because it was
hot outside. He got another win, but he still needs work. He's not
there yet."
Cone was replaced by Dwight Gooden to start the sixth. Gooden
finished with four shutout innings for his second career save, his
first since 1989 with the New York Mets.
"It was nice for myself just to get on track," Gooden said.
"The last couple of games out of the 'pen I've given up some runs
early. It's been a long time since I've been out there in the ninth
inning."
The Yankees started the game with three consecutive singles, the
third by O'Neill snapping his 0-for-15 slump and driving in the
first run. After Bernie Williams grounded into a double play, Jose
Canseco's bloop single to right drove in a run and Justice hit a
443-foot homer.
Justice's shot hit midway in the second deck of the right-field
stands, the longest ever hit to that part of The Ballpark in
Arlington.
Brosius celebrated his 34th birthday with a 374-foot homer to
left in the third inning that made it 7-0. Before that, Jose
Canseco had a leadoff walk, Justice doubled and Chris Turner had an
RBI groundout.
Jorge Posada had an RBI double in the fourth, becoming the last
of the New York starters to get a hit. O'Neill's 408-foot homer to
right-center came an inning later.
Texas starter Doug Davis (4-4) after 2 2/3 innings, allowing
seven runs on 10 hits. Davis, who has split time between the
starting rotation and the bullpen for the Rangers this season, is
1-3 with a 11.70 ERA in his five starts.
"I got behind a lot. After the two bloop hits in the first, I
started getting a little tired, I started leaving the ball up.
Justice and Brosius each got ahold of pitches up. I got them up
there and they hit them pretty hard," he said.
His early departure upset the Rangers' pitching plans for
Wednesday when they had to bring Jonathan Johnson in for early
relief. Johnson had been slated to start the series finale in place
of Ryan Glynn, who is on the disabled list for tests to determine
why he passed out in the dugout during a game Friday.
Johnson is now likely headed back to Triple-A Oklahoma, and
Brian Sikorski will be called up to make his major league debut.
Game notes
O'Neill broke had just two hits his previous 30 at-bats
before going 2-for-5. ... Justice was a triple shy of the cycle.
... At 54-63, the Rangers are nine games below .500 for the first
time since Sept. 27, 1997. They have been below .500 since July 4.
