ATLANTA (AP) -- When Andres Galarraga homers, the Atlanta Braves
usually win.
Galarraga hit his 23rd home run of the season on Tuesday night,
a three-run drive that gave the Braves a 3-1 victory over the San
Diego Padres.

Atlanta is 20-2 this year in games in which Galarraga homered.
"It's a great feeling when you hit a home run like that," he
said of the 436-foot shot deep into the left field seats. It came
with two outs inthe seventh inning and erased a 1-0 San Diego lead.
Woody Williams (7-5) had blanked the Braves on six hits until
Galarraga delivered the big hit against the Padres for the second
night in a row.
On Monday night, Galarraga's two-run double broke a tie and the
Braves went on to a 9-2 victory.
"When I hit the ball I knew it was gone," Galarraga said. "I
watched it a little bit. I tried to enjoy it. I want to see how far
it goes."
Andruw Jones started the go-ahead burst with a one-out double to
center field and after Chipper Jones lined to short, B.J. Surhoff
walked. Galarraga, who had been thrown out at the plate in the
sixth inning, hit Williams' first pitch into the seats.
"He crushed that ball," manager Bobby Cox said.
"It was a hanging slider," Williams said. "I was trying to
throw a normal pitch. I got underneath it and it spun up there.
There are mistakes thrown to every hitter. The good ones don't miss
them."
Williams was locked in a scoreless tie with John Burkett until
the sixth inning when John Mabry hit a solo home run to center
field. Williams pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits.
"Woody pitched too well not to be a winner for us," Padres
manager Bruce Bochy said.
Burkett worked six innings, giving up six hits with three walks
and five strikeouts.
The victory went to reliever Mike Remlinger (5-2), who worked
two scoreless innings, helped by two double plays. He gave up one
hit and walked one.
John Rocker pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 17 chances.
The Braves had a chance to tie it in the sixth when pinch-hitter
Wally Joyner singled, but Galarraga attempted to score from second
and was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Mike Darr.
Game notes
Chipper Jones went 0-for-3. He needs two hits to reach
1,000 for his career. ... Ryan Klesko's 18 stolen bases for the
Padres are three times his previous career best of six. ... Surhoff
went 0-for-2 with two walks, having his nine-game hitting streak
come to an end.
