Tollberg triumphs over former team

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- And to think, the Milwaukee Brewers once told Brian Tollberg he probably couldn't pitch in County Stadium.

Tollberg allowed four hits over seven innings for his first victory since June 25 as the San Diego Padres beat the Brewers 4-0 Friday night.

Tollberg spent two seasons in Milwaukee's minor league system, but the Brewers abruptly traded him before the 1997 season. Tollberg grinned when he recalled his conversation with Brewers farm director Cecil Cooper.

"They traded me because they didn't see me making their Triple-A rotation that year ... so (the victory) is pretty sweet," he said.

The Brewers' four-game winning streak -- their longest of the season -- was snapped by Tollberg (3-2), a rookie who has pitched well but had eight no-decisions in his previous 10 outings. He hadn't won since his first two major league starts.

"He knows there are some things he can't control," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "He hit a little bump in the road where he was getting his pitches up, but he straightened it out, and now he's looking good."

Tollberg, who has allowed only two runs over his last three starts, walked three batters in the first inning but settled down and allowed just one runner past second base. He retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Mike Darr had three hits and drove in a run for the Padres, who won for the fifth time in six games. San Diego scored three runs on four hits in the third inning, capped by Darr's RBI double against Milwaukee starter Jamey Wright (6-7).

Tollberg beat the Brewers with good control and a deceptive mix of four pitches. Five of his six strikeouts were called strikeouts, and three ended innings.

"He outpitched our guy," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said. "It's hard to say how good his stuff was. Evidently, it was good enough to shut us out."

Bochy and Tollberg both said he could have finished, but with a well-rested bullpen, Bochy chose to give Tollberg an early night.

The offensive punch the Brewers showed while winning seven of their previous nine games fizzled. Richie Sexson, who homered in each of his last three games, was among the five who struck out looking against Tollberg.

"We didn't get many guys on base, and when we did, we didn't get the job done," Sexson said. "You're not going to win many games playing like that."

Wright was hit early and often, though not terribly hard. He gave up nine hits -- just one for extra bases -- and four runs in five innings while losing his third straight decision.

"They got a couple of bleeders and a couple down the line," Wright said. "We've been pretty hot the last few days, but they came in and did a good job against us."

Phil Nevin and Bret Boone drove in runs with groundouts, and John Mabry had an RBI single. Ron Belliard's fourth-inning triple was Milwaukee's only extra-base hit.

Game notes
Damian Jackson stole his 19th base in the third inning. He beat a rare poor throw by Brewers catcher Henry Blanco, but Blanco recovered to throw out Ryan Klesko in the seventh. Blanco has thrown out 33 of 59 base-stealers this season. ... Wright went 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA in the month of June, but he has just one victory since then. ... San Diego started a seven-game road trip, while Milwaukee began a seven-game homestand. ... The Padres are 14-7 against Milwaukee since the Brewers joined the NL in 1998. ... The Brewers were shut out for the seventh time this season and the first time since Aug. 8. ... Tollberg helped the Beloit Snappers win the Midwest League title in 1995. He was a part of a starting rotation that included major leaguers Steve Woodard, Jeff D'Amico and Kelly Wunsch.
