Ortiz helps himself with 3 hits

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Russ Ortiz earned his fifth victory, but he still wanted to talk hitting. Who could blame him?

Ortiz, who entered the game batting .182, had a career-high three hits and scored twice as the San Francisco Giants pounded out 21 hits in a 16-3 rout over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal (24) tags out Giants pitcher Russ Ortiz in the third inning Friday. The Giants scored 16 other times, though.

"I hadn't hit a ball hard all year until tonight," said Ortiz, who raised his average to .234. "I finally did it on my first hit. That felt incredible. The other two singles were just hit in the spots. It's fun to hit, but I'm not exactly a good hitter."

Ortiz was 3-for-3 with a walk. He singled in three consecutive innings and knocked in a run.

The Giants, winners in nine of their last 11 games, extended their lead to 3½ over Arizona in the NL West, the biggest edge this year. San Francisco has won nine straight against Philadelphia.

Marvin Bernard had four hits and two RBIs and Rich Aurilia drove in three runs for the Giants. Armando Rios hit a two-run homer in the eighth. "Everything was contagious," said Bernard, who raised his lifetime average at Veterans Stadium to .376. "Even Russ got in on it."

"We were talking about this place before the game, everybody seems to hit well here."

San Francisco's outburst was more than enough for Ortiz (10-10). The right-hander allowed two runs and six hits in six innings with four walks and five strikeouts. In his last five wins, the Giants have outscored their opponents, 50-9.

"I don't know what it is lately, but we've been able to hit double figures (in runs) a lot when I'm pitching," Ortiz said. That makes my job a lot easier."

San Francisco scored six runs in the first two innings to chase Kent Bottenfield (1-2). The Giants had 12 runs on 16 hits through five innings. And, it could have been worse as the team left 11 baserunners stranded during that span.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead on Barry Bonds' RBI single in the first. San Francisco made it 6-0 in the second. Mueller had a two-run double, Jeff Kent followed with an RBI double, J.T. Snow had a sacrifice fly, and Ellis Burks capped the frame with an RBI single.

After pitching his first complete game of the season and first career shutout five days earlier, Bottenfield lasted just two innings in his shortest outing of the year.

"His feelings might be hurt, but Kent is OK," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "It just wasn't his night. We were in deep counts on every single hitter all night long."

Philadelphia cut the deficit to 6-2 on Marlon Anderson's two-run double in the second. The Giants jumped on Jason Boyd for four more runs in the fourth. Aurilia doubled in two, Bernard had an RBI single and Bonds hit a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Ortiz and Bernard added RBI singles against Wayne Gomes. Aurilia doubled home a run off Chris Brock in the sixth. Tom Prince's RBI double made it 13-3 in the seventh off Aaron Fultz.

"You never want to run the score up, but it's tough when you got your extra guys in there because they're trying to get their hits too," Giants manager Dusty Baker said.
