CHICAGO (AP) -- Now the Los Angeles Dodgers know how most teams
feel at Wrigley Field.
Ricky Gutierrez hit a go-ahead solo homer off reliever Gregg
Olson in the seventh inning, and Eric Young added some insurance
with a sacrifice fly Saturday as the Cubs beat the Dodgers 6-4.
It was Chicago's first victory over the Dodgers at Wrigley since
May 21, 1998, snapping an eight-game losing streak. The Cubs also
won for just the third time in their last 15 games.
"Wrigley Field got me," Olson said. "When Gutierrez hit it, I
thought it was a mediocre fly to center field. I was surprised to
see Tom Goodwin stop. In 99 percent of the parks, that's an out."
Young drove in two other runs, and Rondell White had two RBI
before leaving the game with a dislocated shoulder. He was taken to
Northwestern Memorial Hospital for evaluation, and his status
wasn't immediately known, though manager Don Baylor wasn't
optimistic.
"I don't know how long he's going to be out, but he's not going
to play for a while," Baylor said.
Alex Cora drove in two runs for the Dodgers.
The game was dragged out for three hours and six minutes because
of Fox Sports' "Turn Back the Clock Game," a retrospective of
televised baseball. Breaks between innings were three minutes long,
and starter Matt Herges had his warmups delayed twice.
But it wasn't the delays that did the Dodgers in, it was their
pitching.
"The last four or five outings, I've thrown the ball well.
Today was a day when things didn't go my way," Olson said.
Olson relieved Herges to start the sixth and promptly gave up a
double to Sammy Sosa. White then singled to right, driving in Sosa
to tie it at 4.
Gutierrez gave the Cubs the lead, dropping a shot just over the
left-center fence to start the seventh. It was the 10th homer of
the year and 49th RBI for Gutierrez, who was recently dropped from
the No. 2 spot to seventh.
"Second's nice with E.Y. in front, but down there I have a
chance to bring in a lot of runs," Gutierrez said. "Whatever it
takes."
Olson then walked Jeff Reed and gave up a crazy single to Gary
Matthews Jr. The ball hit the tip of Matthews' bat and dropped just
in front of home plate. Matthews didn't see the ball at first and
then took off running, beating catcher Todd Hundley's wild throw to
first.
Reed took third on the error, and Young drove him home with the
sacrifice fly.
"It doesn't mean that much," Young said of beating the
Dodgers, his former team. "I want to come through in the clutch
any time."
Antonio Osuna relieved Olson and got the last two outs to end
the seventh. Olson gave up three runs -- two of them earned -- and
four hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Tim Worrell (3-3) gave up one walk in two innings.
Rick Aguilera pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 35 tries.
"We got Aggie in the game for a save for the first time in a
while," said Kevin Tapani, who got his 10th no-decision of the
year. "Got a game in the left-hand column, so it's good."
Even better for the Cubs was seeing their sputtering offense
finally get going. After stranding 19 runners in Friday's
doubleheader, the Cubs broke out with a three-run, third inning.
Young drove in two runs with a single to left, and Herges forced
in a run when he hit White with the bases loaded, giving Chicago a
3-1 lead.
The Dodgers scored three runs in the sixth as a Cubs gamble
failed. With runners on second and third and one out, Tapani struck
out Hundley. He intentionally walked Adrian Beltre, who drove in
five runs Friday, to load the bases, but then walked Bruce Aven to
force in a run.
Alex Cora followed with a two-run single to center to give the
Dodgers a 4-3 lead.
But the Cubs came right back to tie the game in the bottom of
the sixth, and Gutierrez won it in the seventh.
"We got some clutch hits," Baylor said. "Finally."
Game notes
The Dodgers recalled Aven from Triple-A Albuquerque before
the game. He went 0-for-3 with an RBI. ... White and Beltre
extended their hitting streaks to eight games each. ... Aguilera
has converted his last nine save opportunities. ... Gutierrez's 10
homers double his previous career high of five in 1993. His 49 RBI also are a career high.
