MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Marquis Grissom's error in the top of the 10th looked disastrous. Damian Jackson's miscue in the bottom half was. Jackson's error on a routine play at shortstop was followed by James Mouton's two-run single off Trevor Hoffman as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. "I messed up a very easy play," Jackson said after his 20th error of the season spoiled the Padres' chances at taking two in a row from Milwaukee. Hoffman (4-5) was protecting a 5-4 lead that Padres had just taken in their half of the 10th when they went ahead with help from a two-base error by Grissom. Hoffman struck out the first two batters, but then gave up a clean single to Luis Lopez. The game looked over when Grissom, who was booed when he came to plate, sent a routine grounder to shortstop. Jackson fielded the ball cleanly, but inexplicably threw it past second baseman Bret Boone who had his foot planted squarely on the bag waiting for the throw. The ball sailed past Boone and allowed Lopez and Grissom advance. Mouton then hit Hoffman's first pitch into left field to drive in the winning runs, both unearned. "The grass was a little wet, but that's no excuse," Jackson said. "I could have gotten to the ball a little sooner and underhanded it to second base. I didn't and let the team down." Curtis Leskanic (5-3) got the win despite allowing pinch-hitter Dave Magadan's RBI single in the top of the 10th that put the Padres up 5-4. "Everybody on the team showed great perseverance," said Jackson who also had a throwing error in the sixth that set up Raul Casanova's RBI double in the sixth. "We fought back, and when it came down to it, I just let everybody down tonight." Magadan's chance to be a hero for the Padres came at the expense of Grissom. With two outs in the 10th, Wiki Gonzalez hit a sinking liner to center. Grissom charged the ball, but then pulled up at the last second and the ball skipped past him and rolled to the fence in center. Gonzalez raced to third and then scored on Magadan's single. "He was more upset with himself than anybody," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "He couldn't even smile after the win because he felt he let the team down." Gonzalez's solo homer off Juan Acevedo in the eighth tied the game at 4. The Brewers had gone ahead 4-3 on Burnitz's run-scoring grounder in the seventh followed a throwing error by third baseman Phil Nevin. The Padres scored two runs in the third off Milwaukee starter Paul Rigdon, but could have had more. Eric Owens doubled and took third when Damian Jackson reached on first baseman Richie Sexson's error. Jackson was caught stealing just before Ryan Klesko hit a sacrifice fly. Nevin followed with his 28th homer. Game notesIn the Brewers' fifth, pitcher Jay Witasick deflected Mark Loretta's shot back up the middle with his leg.
