GAME LOG
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Sidney Ponson stopped his three-game losing streak with his fifth complete game of the season, and Jeff Conine hit a solo homer Monday night as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Anaheim Angels 3-1. Ponson (8-11) scattered eight hits and struck out six, including Mo Vaughn twice. Vaughn's AL-high strikeout total rose to 160. The complete game was the 13th by the Orioles this year, tying Toronto for the major league lead. Ponson walked two in winning for only the second time in seven starts since July 31, with four losses over that span. His previous win was 2-1 over Kansas City on Aug. 20. He gave up the Angels' lone run on Garret Anderson's RBI single in the fourth. Conine restored the Orioles' two-run lead in the sixth when he connected off Scott Schoeneweis (7-8) for his 13th homer. Baltimore had taken a 2-0 lead in the third when a double steal led to a run. After Delino DeShields walked with two outs, Conine singled and DeShields stopped at second. With Cal Ripken up, both runners took off and catcher Bengie Molina threw to second, trapping Conine in a rundown between first and second. But DeShields, who had slid head-first into third, regained his feet and headed for home. Vaughn made an off-balance throw from first that sailed wide of Molina, allowing DeShields to score and Conine to take third. Both runners were credited with steals; the run was earned since it came on a fielder's choice. Baltimore moved ahead to stay when Brook Fordyce drew a one-out walk in the second, advanced to second on a balk by Schoeneweis and scored on a single by Luis Matos. Schoeneweis gave up three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, leaving with muscle spasms in his back. Game notesTroy Glaus became only the third player in the 40-year history of the Angels to draw at least 100 walks during a season. The others were Brian Downing in 1987 and Tony Phillips in 1995. ... Ripken beat out a grounder down the third-base line in the eighth for his 3,053rd hit, tying Rod Carew for 20th on the career list. ... Anaheim RHP Al Levine, a reliever pressed into starting duty when Matt Wise came up with a sore elbow Sunday, will get another start Friday against Minnesota. Levine, who pitched four scoreless innings in the Angels' 2-1 victory over Baltimore, this time will replace the struggling Scott Karl in the rotation. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Baltimore Clubhouse Anaheim Clubhouse Mussina rejects Orioles' six-year, $72 million deal
