Williams six-hitter gets it done for Padres

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Woody Williams tried to keep it simple and it paid off.

Williams was in command from the outset as he threw a six-hitter to lead the San Diego Padres over the Colorado Rockies 7-2 Monday night.

Williams (10-5) stayed ahead of the Colorado hitters by consistently throwing first-pitch strikes as he threw his third complete game of the season.

"I was able to hit my spots the way I'm capable and should do," Williams said. "The only way I can survive in this league is to throw strike one and go from there."

San Diego gave Williams a big boost by scoring five runs in the first inning off Julian Tavarez (10-3), including John Mabry's two-run single that keyed the outburst.

Williams was especially effective against Colorado's Todd Helton, who went 0-for-4 as his average dropped to .379. His average hasn't been that low since Aug. 9, when it was .378.

"He helped me out by swinging at pitches out of the strike zone," Williams said.

Williams retired 16 consecutive batters before Todd Hollandsworth homered with one out in the eighth.

"Any time a guy pitches like that, you're going to look a little flat," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "He was the sole reason for that."

Williams struck out four and walked none in his third complete game of the season. He also had a run-scoring grounder in the third, giving him nine RBIs.

"That was as good of stuff as he's had all year," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "He didn't give them any balls in the middle of the plate."

Mabry's single was one of five hits against Tavarez, who gave up five runs, walked two and hit a batter as he recorded just one out in the first inning. It was the shortest of his 21 career starts.

Tavarez lost for the first time in nine starts this season with Colorado. He had been 5-0 with a 2.25 ERA, with the Rockies going 8-0 in his previous starts.

"I got a little behind in count a little bit," Tavarez said. "They also hit the ball into the hole. There's not much you can do about that."

San Diego loaded the bases in the first on Damian Jackson's leadoff double, an infield single by Desi Relaford and a walk to Ryan Klesko.

One out later, Mabry lined a two-run single. Mike Darr and Eric Owens followed with consecutive RBI singles. With runners on first and third, Owens stole second base and Darr was credited with a steal of home when he scored easily on the throw down to second.

"It's a big help when you can put up five in the first inning," Darr said. "He was a little wild and had trouble locating sometimes. But we took advantage of it."

Colorado scored in the second on a double by Hollandsworth and Brett Mayne's RBI single.

San Diego added its final run on Wiki Gonzalez's RBI single in the seventh.
