PHOENIX (AP) _ Jason Blake scored on a breakaway in the second period as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Phoenix Coyotes 1-0 in the preseason opener for both teams Thursday. The game, which began at 11 a.m., was played before more than 16,000 school children as part of the team's second annual Cool Coyotes' Field Trip. Blake deked goalie Robert Esche to the ice, then backhanded the puck past the goalie's stick side 51 seconds into the second period. Kings goalie Stephane Fiset made 10 saves in the first 29:53, and Steve Passmore stopped 14 shots the rest of the way. Esche had 20 saves in his 30 minutes of work, and Patrick DeRochers stopped 11 shots.
