TRENTON, New Jersey (Ticker) -- John LeClair made an immediate case for a long-term contract by scoring twice in the exhibition opener as the Philadelphia Flyers recorded a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Two days after contract talks broke off, LeClair scored in the first period and added an insurance goal late in the second.

The Flyers stormed to a 2-0 lead by tallying twice in a 46-second span of the opening period. Kevin Stevens, trying to come back from a stint in the NHL's substance abuse program, scored from close range on a power play at 7:36 before LeClair doubled the lead at 8:22.

The Islanders rallied in the second period on a power-play goal by last season's leading scorer, Mariusz Czerkawski, and tied it at 7:05 on defenseman Mathieu Biron's tally.

But New York's Mats Lindgren took a high-sticking penalty and Brad Tiley beat former Flyer John Vanbiesbrouck on a shot from the point to put Philadelphia ahead for good.

Vanbiesbrouck made 27 saves, while rookies Roman Cechmanek and Maxime Ouellet combined to stop 28 shots for the Flyers.

Philadelphia defenseman Chris Therien left with an undisclosed injury in the second period and teammate Rick Lessard suffered a broken jaw in a fight with Isles defenseman Eric Cairns.

The game drew a sellout crowd of 7,700 at Sovereign Bank Arena, home of the Trenton Titans of the East Coast Hockey League.
