UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ Zdeno Chara's first preseason goal helped the New York Islanders to a 1-1 tie with the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night. Chara tied the game with New York's first even-strength goal of the preseason and fourth goal overall. His slap shot from the left point sailed over backup goalie Chris Terreri's shoulder at 7:54 of the third period. Rookie defenseman Henrik Rehnberg scored New Jersey's goal. Martin Brodeur started in goal and stopped 17 shots, while Terreri made 10 saves. Islanders goalie John Vanbiesbrouck played the entire game and stopped 23 shots. After having a goal disallowed at 1:26 of the first period on a kick-in, the Devils capitalized on a power play to take a 1-0 lead at 10:42, as Rehnberg's slap shot from the left point fluttered over Vanbiesbrouck's right shoulder. New York's power play, ranked 23rd in the league last season, remains a problem. The Islanders were scoreless in seven man-advantage chances against the Devils (1-1-1), and are 3-for-33 overall in three preseason games (0-2-1).
