WASHINGTON (AP) _ Calle Johansson broke a tie with 2:30 left in the third period as the Washington Capitals edged the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in an exhibition game Saturday night.

Working on a delayed penalty call, Steve Konowalchuk gathered in a loose puck behind the Flyers net and centered a pass to Johansson, who beat goalie Brian Boucher from between the circles.

Richard Zednik also scored and Konowalchuk added two assists for the Capitals (2-3-1). Craig Billington, expected to shoulder the load until Vezina Trophy winner Olaf Kolzig returns from arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-October, made 22 saves.

John LeClair scored for the Flyers (5-3-0), but left midway through the second period with a minor knee injury and did not return as a precaution.

A tripping penalty against Washington's Joe Reekie set up a power-play goal by LeClair that gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with 3:27 left in the opening period. From the right wing, Mark Recchi feathered a pass along the goal line that LeClair pushed past Billington from in front of the crease for his team-high fifth preseason goal.

Zednik tallied on a breakaway with 6:42 remaining in regulation for a 1-1 tie. Working off a neutral-zone pass from Steve Konowalchuk, Zednik forced Boucher to come out to cut down the angle. When Boucher, who finished with 22 saves, moved between the circles, Zednik deked him down, moved around him and flipped the puck into an empty net.
