First Round Picks: No. 23 (from Panthers)
1999-2000 Record: 30-37-15 (8), 83 points (Tied for 18th overall)
What they need
The Canucks have had a revolving door in goal in recent years and do not have any significant
prospects coming up the ranks at the position.
In their system
Brian Burke made maneuvers-a-plenty on Draft Day '99 in order to be able to draft both of the
Sedin twins -- left wing Daniel (2nd overall) and center Henrik (3rd overall). The moves seem to have been worth it. Henrik
had 61 points (14 G, 47 A) and Daniel had 59 (27 G, 32 A) in 61 games for Swedish club MoDo.
Another Scandanavian
winger of note is Finnish left wing Jarkko Ruutu (68th overall in '98). In 65 games at Syracuse (AHL), he had 26 goals and 58 points and was tied for the AHL lead in plus/minus with a +33 rating.
On the blueline, Ryan Bonni (34th overall in
'97) had a steady year at Syracuse, with 18 points and 125 PIM's in 71 games. However, Vancouver's top pick in '98
(4th overall), rearguard Bryan Allen, was limited to just nine AHL games this year due to injury. In the junior ranks,
defenseman Rene Vydareny (69th overall in '99) had a capable year for Memorial Cup Champs Rimouski (QMJHL), with
30 points in 51 games. In goal, free agent pick-up Alfie Michaud had an up-and-down rookie season. He saw action in two games for the Canucks (0-1-0, 4.35 GAA), but won just 10 games in 38 appearances at Syracuse with a 3.86 GAA.
Recent draft history
The anticipated arrival of the Sedin twins should reverse a recent trend with Vancouver's
first round selections. Of their last seven first round selections prior to last year, the only one to make an impact in a
Canucks uniform was Mattias Ohlund (13th overall in '94).
