Calgary Flames

First Round Picks: No. 9
1999-2000 Record: 31-41-10 (5), 77 points (22nd overall)

What they need
Forward line help, particularly at the center position, is among the needs for the Flames' new regime. Also, a young goaltender may be required following the trade of Jean-Sebastien Giguere to Anaheim just prior to the expansion draft protected list deadline.

In their system
Calgary hopes that Daniel Tkaczuk (6th overall in '97) will be a remedy to their pivot woes. In his first pro season at Saint John (New Brunswick-AHL), he had 25 goals and 66 points in 80 games and was second on the club in scoring. Another center with potential is '99 draftee Oleg Saprykin (11th overall), who also had 66 points (30 G, 36 A) in 48 games for the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds. Dan Cavanaugh (38th overall in '99) is another hopeful at center. In his sophomore season at Boston University (NCAA-Hockey East), he had 34 points in 40 games.

On the right wing, speedy Rico Fata (6th overall in '98), had 29 goals and 58 points in 76 games for Saint John and could possibly move up to the NHL level permanently next season.

On defense, a pair of rearguards from the WCHA are of note. Jesse Cook (153rd overall in '99), a 6'6" 210-pounder, had 14 points and 41 PIM's for the University of Denver, while Paul Manning (62nd overall in '98) had 23 points in 39 games just down the road at Colorado College.

Recent draft history
The Flames have used "forward" thinking in recent drafts. Six of their last eight first round choices have been used on forwards (4 centers, a left wing and a right wing). However, of those six forwards, only Cory Stillman has made a significant impact at the NHL level to date.
