Phoenix Coyotes
|
First Round Picks: No. 19
1999-2000 Record: 39-35-8 (4), 90 points (12th overall)
What they need
The Coyotes may look to add wingers as their current corps (Greg Adams, Benoit Hogue, Dallas
Drake) begins to get up in years. Depth on the blueline could also be a concern in the "Valley Of The Sun."

In their system
Center Scott Kelman (15th overall in '99) was slowed by shoulder surgery, but still had 12 goals and
50 points in 58 games for the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds. Phoenix's other first round pick last year, defenseman Kirill
Safronov (19th overall), had a fine first North American season with the QMJHL's Quebec Ramparts, scoring 10 goals and
39 points to go along with 93 PIM's in 50 games. Another defense prospect is Robert Schnabel (129th overall in '98). He
bounced back from an eye injury to rack up 133 PIM's in 40 games with Springfield (AHL).
Three other prospects who
had good years in Western Massachusetts were goalies Patrick DesRochers (14th overall in '98, 21-17-7, 3.03 GAA in 52
games) and Robert Esche (139th overall in '96, 9-9-2, 3.03 GAA in 21 games), and center Wyatt Smith (233rd overall in
'97, 14-26-40 in 60 games). Esche also shined with Team USA during the World Championship this spring. In the major
junior ranks, center Jason Jaspers (71st overall in '99) starred with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves, scirng 43 goals and 96
points in 62 games.
Recent draft history
The Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise has been a "50-50" draft team over recent years. Of
their last 10 first round selections, five have been used on forwards, while the other five have been defense-oriented (four defensemen and one goaltender).
