First Round Picks: No. 25
1999-2000 Record: 43-29-10 (6), 102 points (Tied for 5th overall)
What they need
Having dealt Roman Turek and Manny Fernandez in post-Cup Finals deals in consecutive years,
Dallas could use another goalie to groom in their system behind Ed Belfour and Marty Turco. Depth at defense to pro-
vide heirs to the current veteran unit could also be important, especially after sending one prospect (23-year old Brad
Lukowich) to Minnesota as part of the Fernandez trade.
In their system
A young physical defenseman in the Dallas fold is John Erskine (39th overall in '98). In 58 games
this season at London (OHL), he had 12 goals, 43 points, and 177 PIM's. On the forward line, left wing Mathias
Tjarnqvist (96th overall in '99) had 12 goals and 24 points in 50 games for Swedish League Champion Djurgarden, but
still appears to be some time away from being an NHL-level player. Right wing Tyler Bouck (57th overall in '98) had a
solid year at Prince George (WHL), scoring 30 goals and 63 points to go along with 183 PIM's in 57 games. An up-and-
comer is diminutive (5'9", 180) center Niko Kapanen (173rd overall in '98), who had 20 goals and 48 points in 53 games
for Hammelina (Finland).
Recent draft history
The Stars have not made a first round pick in either of the last two Entry Drafts. Of their
recent draft choices, Brenden Morrow, Roman Lyashenko (both ?97), Jon Sim (?96), Jamie Langenbrunner (?93), and
Jere Lehtinen (?92) are all non-first rounders who have contributed to the Stars' recent success.
