Hoop Nightmares

Yulia Barsukova took home gold.
Favored Alina Kabaeva of Russia fell to third place when she lost control of her hoop, allowing teammate Yulia Barsukova to win the rhythmic all-around gold. Kabaeva, the defending world champion, was leading when the error occurred. Despite earning the top scores in ball and ribbon, Kabaeva was unable to catch up. The day before, Russia captured the group gold medal in a tiebreaker with Belarus, which took silver.

• Kabaeva easily won qualifying
• Romania threatens to sue over Raducan
