McFalls' .367 average earns playing time

SYDNEY, Australia -- Dot Richardson, who sparked the U.S. softball team to a gold medal in Atlanta in 1996, will alternate with Jennifer McFalls at second base over the team's first two games.

Coach Ralph Raymond said he would play Richardson in the first game, against Canada on Sunday (Saturday night U.S. time), and McFalls in Game 2 of the preliminary round against Cuba on Monday (Sunday night U.S. time).

"Then we'll see after that," Raymond said.

Richardson's popularity grew at the Atlanta Games because of her bubbly personality. An orthopedic surgeon, she hit the game-winning homer in the gold-medal game against China, but she didn't make the team for 2½ years before she returned in late 1998.

On the team's Olympic preparation tour this summer, the 38-year-old Richardson batted .287, compared to .367 for McFalls.
