AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Tina Thompson had 28 points and 11 rebounds and Janeth Arcain scored 24 points as the Houston Comets beat the Detroit Shock 74-73 Saturday night. The four-time defending WNBA champion Comets won their second straight after a season-opening loss to Los Angeles. Detroit was playing its first game of the season. Astou Ndiaye-Diatta led Detroit with 24 points. Elena Tornikidou added 17. The Shock, who have lost six straight to the Comets, charged to a 16-6 lead, but failed to sustain the momentum. Detroit missed 18 of its last 21 shots in the first half. Houston closed the opening half with a 33-7 run for a 39-23 halftime lead. Detroit, trailing 55-40 with 12 minutes left, scored 13 straight points and closed within two with 9:11 remaining. Ndiaye-Diatta scored 10 points in the run, including consecutive three-points, just the second and third of her three-year pro career. Thompson answered with a three-point play and helped Houston push its lead to five points. Arcain scored on two driving layups to give Houston a 70-63 lead with 1:25 left, and helped seal the win by hitting four free throws in the final minute.
