O's end White Sox's 6-game streak

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Line drives, bloops and walks.

The Baltimore Orioles had a good mix of all three Tuesday night as they beat the Chicago White Sox 12-6, ending their six-game winning streak.

"We got some cheap ones and we got some legitimate ones," Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said. "This is the way we've been winning so far, with everybody contributing."

Delino DeShields reached base five straight times; the Orioles had a six-run third inning; and they made the most of 12 walks issued by White Sox pitching.

Baltimore starter Pat Rapp was more than glad for the support as he stayed unbeaten with his third victory. The Orioles have now scored 32 runs in his four starts.

Rapp (3-0) gave up eighth hits and five runs in five innings, including a three-run homer to Paul Konerko in the fifth.

"I really appreciate it, I don't know what else to say," Rapp said of all the runs the Orioles have scored for him.`

"I'm happy to take those any time I can get them. I just would like to throw seven or eight innings and then I wouldn't mind giving up five."

DeShields had a double, two singles, two walks and three RBIs, and Rich Amaral keyed the Orioles' big inning with a two-run triple. Chicago lefty Mike Sirotka (2-2), scratched from his previous start because of soreness in his forearm, gave up eight runs, four of them unearned, and lasted only 2 1/3 innings. He was hurt by five walks, two errors and two bloop hits among the five he surrendered.

"We had some sloppy pitching and some sloppy defense," Sirotka said. "That didn't give us a chance to win."

Sirotka walked Jeff Conine in the third, Cal Ripken hit a bloop single and Charles Johnson followed with a single for a 4-2 lead. Amaral then blooped a ball down the right-field line that got by a charging Magglio Ordonez for a two-run triple.

Mike Bordick followed with a liner to right that Ordonez dropped, allowing Amaral to trot in with the seventh run, finishing Sirotka. Brady Anderson then greeted reliever Scott Eyre with an RBI double and DeShields delivered another run-producing hit and the Orioles were rolling, 9-2. "They walked 12 guys and against our lineup you can't do that," Rapp said. "We've got so many veteran guys who are going to get hits with all those guys on base."

Ripken and Johnson walked to start the Orioles second, but after Amaral hit into a double play, it looked like Sirotka would get out of the jam. But third baseman Greg Norton muffed Bordick's bouncer to third, allowing Ripken to score. Bordick stole second, Anderson hit an RBI double and DeShields hit a run-scoring single for a quick 3-0 lead.

Chris Singleton and Mark Johnson had RBI singles for Chicago in the second. Konerko's fifth homer made it 9-5.

The Orioles tacked on two in the seventh on DeShields' RBI double and an RBI single by B.J. Surhoff, who made it 12-6 with a homer in the ninth.

Game notes
Orioles RHP Scott Erickson, on the DL with an elbow problem, made his first rehab start for Class A Frederick on Tuesday night. He threw 84 pitches in 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and three hits, with one walk and five strikeouts, against Potomac. ... Reliever Calvin Maduro was forced out in the sixth inning after being hit above the right ankle by a line drive off the bat of Norton. X-rays were negative and he suffered a bruise. He was replaced by Buddy Groom, who got Herbert Perry to line back to the mound, starting a double play. ... Sirotka's outing was the second-shortest start of his career. He lasted only two innings in July of 1996 against Kansas City.
