Pavano first Expo with 3 wins

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MONTREAL (AP) -- Lee Stevens knows he has to protect Vladimir Guerrero.

Stevens hit a three-run homer and Michael Barrett had a two-run double to lead the Montreal Expos to a 10-4 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. "I know they're going to pitch around him a lot this year and that's my job behind him, to try to come through like that," Stevens said.

Chris Widger also homered for Montreal as Carl Pavano (3-0) allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings to become the first Expos pitcher with three wins.

Barrett hit a two-run double and pinch-hitter Andy Tracy followed with an RBI single for his first major league hit as Montreal scored three runs with two outs in the sixth.

Stevens' fourth homer capped a four-run seventh as the Expos won for the seventh time in their last nine games at Olympic Stadium.

"In that situation, I was just trying to not hit into a double play and hit the ball into the outfield somewhere," Stevens said. "I happened to get some good wood on it and so it was just a bonus that it went out."

Trailing 4-3, Montreal rallied for three two-out runs in the sixth, chasing Brian Bohanon (0-2) in the process.

Guerrero singled with one out and advanced to third on Jose Vidro's single.

Stevens took a called third strike for the second out. Jerry Dipoto relieved and walked Widger to load the bases.

Barrett lined a two-run single to left to put the Expos ahead 5-4. Julian Tavarez came on to face Tracy, who was making his first major league appearance, pinch-hitting for Pavano.

"It was a total team effort," Stevens said. "Michael Barrett got a big hit for us, and that same inning he helped pick me up when I didn't get the job done. That's the way you win ballgames. It takes 25 guys to win a ballgame. You can't always rely on Vlady."

Tracy, 27, ground a single up the middle to drive in Montreal's third run of the inning.

"I know all about their good young players," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "They're not going to be an easy team to play. They have a good combination of speed and power over there."

Bohanon allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings

"I felt great," Bohanon said. "I felt like I only made one mistake and that was to Widger, or whoever hit the home run off me. Other than that, everything felt good."

Rondell White's two-run double put Montreal ahead 2-1 in the first.

Mike Lansing hit a two-run single in the third to tie it at 2 and Colorado took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Jeff Cirillo scored as Neifi Perez grounded into a double play.

Widger's third homer tied it in the bottom half before Larry Walker's run-scoring grounder in the fifth restored the Rockies' one-run lead.
