Twins: Seven wins in past eight games

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sean Bergman was quick to give credit to his defense. But Minnesota manager Tom Kelly thought Bergman deserved the accolades for the Twins winning for the seventh time in eight games.

Sean Bergman
Sean Bergman lasted 6 1/3 innings and got his second win of the season (2-0).

"I walked too many people today (but) the defense played great behind me," Bergman said after the Twins beat the New York Yankees, 6-1 Tuesday night.

Bergman (2-0) allowed only one run, four hits and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. "Bergman pitched his best game of the year for us," Kelly said. "He kept the ball down. He had a good breaking ball and a good sinker." Bergman walked Scott Brosius with one out in the seventh and then gave up a single to Wilson Delgado.

Travis Miller came in and gave up a pinch-hit single to Jim Leyritz, loading the bases, and a sacrifice fly to Derek Jeter. But that was all the Yankees would get as they lost for the fourth time in five games.

New York has scored only nine runs in the four losses.

"I sense a little frustration on the offensive part but that doesn't concern me," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "I think everybody's feeling a little extra pressure to do it themselves."

Jacque Jones, who lost a fly ball in the sun Monday that almost cost the Twins the opener of the series, drove in two runs and Ron Coomer also had two RBI.

Todd Walker and Cristian Guzman gave the Twins a 2-0 lead in the third inning with back-to-back homers off Ramiro Mendoza (2-2).

"Something kept it fair," Walker said of his second homer of the year.

Jones made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the fourth, scoring Marcus Jensen who had doubled with two out.

Minnesota added two more runs in the sixth on Jones's RBI single that knocked out Mendoza and Torii Hunter's RBI groundout.

Mendoza, making only his third start of the season, allowed five runs on and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

"My sinker was working good. I thought I threw pretty well today," he said.

Coomer's RBI single in the seventh gave the Twins an insurance run.

Game notes
Minnesota's Matt Lawton extended his career-high hitting streak to 12 games with a first-inning single. ... Twins are only 7-6 when they score the game's first run. ... Derek Jeter has been the Yankees only starting No. 2 hitter this season having started all 19 games batting second. ... Mendoza had allowed only one homer in his first four games before giving up two in the third. ... Brosius was 0-for-3 with a walk in his first game since opening day when he was sidelined with a rib cage injury. Alfonso Soriano was sent down to Triple-A Columbus to make room for Brosius.
