Mets' Pratt proves worthy substitute to Piazza

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- Todd Pratt made sure the New York Mets didn't miss All-Star catcher Mike Piazza.

Pratt, playing for the injured Piazza, had his first career four-hit game as the Mets tied a team record with 23 hits in a 13-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

Todd Pratt, filling in for the injured Mike Piazza, had the first four-hit game of his career.
"I'm just glad I'm not hitting .200 anymore," said Pratt, who went 4-for-5 to raise his average from .238 to .346. "I don't care about the four hits. Don't get me wrong, but last year when people tried to put pressure on me in the playoffs, I just went out and played my game."

Edgardo Alfonzo also had four hits, and Derek Bell and Todd Zeile added three apiece for the Mets, who last had 23 hits in a nine-inning game on May 26, 1964, against the Cubs. New York snapped a three-game skid.

When told his team tied a club record, Mets manager Bobby Valentine said, "Maybe next time we'll break it."

Facing the Mets for the first time since being traded to Colorado in January, Masato Yoshii (1-2) had his worst outing in five starts with the Rockies. He gave up six runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

"I still don't 100 percent understand what went wrong," Yoshii said through an interpreter. "I would like to spend some time with (pitching coach) Marcel Lachemann, so I can figure out what I need to do next time I pitch."

Rick Reed (3-0), who had allowed just three earned runs in his first four starts, surrendered two-run homers to Larry Walker and Mike Lansing and a solo shot to Todd Helton. He gave up six runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

"What's so funny?" Reed said as reporters good-naturedly ribbed him about getting a victory in spite his ragged pitching line. "You ever try to pitch here? It's not fun."

Despite being bothered by a bruised left hand and a sprained left wrist, Reed contributed offensively as he singled and scored a run. By the fifth inning everybody in the Mets' starting lineup had at least one hit.

"They swung the bat good and we certainly helped them with it," Rockies manager Buddy Bell said. "There's no doubt about it. They all hit three or four apiece, I guess."

New York broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six runs to take an 8-2 lead. Pratt, Bell, Zeile and Jay Payton each drove in runs in the inning, and the Mets added three more in the fifth against Rick Croushore.

Pratt made only his fifth start of the season but will handle the catching duties as Piazza recovers from a bruised right wrist and hyperextended elbow.

"I didn't do too much damage today," Pratt said. "I only accounted for one run (an RBI single). Mine's only a three- or four-game stint. We have to get the guys going who are going to be in the lineup everyday.

"I'm happy Reeder threw a good game. I'm happy Todd Zeile is back in the .280s. I'm happy Alfonzo is over .300. There were a lot of confidence boosters out there today."

Bell, included in a trade that brought left-hander Mike Hampton to New York, has been one of the biggest surprises in the majors. He raised his average to .384 and is 22-for-42 with 13 RBI in the last 11 games.
