Jays' bats come alive in victory over Yanks

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tony Batista, whose two errors helped cost Toronto the series opener against the New York Yankees, redeemed himself on Saturday.

Batista had three hits, including a sixth-inning double that drove in the go-ahead run, to help the Blue Jays and David Wells beat the Yankees 6-2.

David Wells
David Wells won for the second time in five decisions against the Yankees since being traded for Roger Clemens.

"I got three hits, I catch the ball and we win. Today, I helped my team. Yesterday, I helped the other team," said Batista, whose errors contributed to a 6-0 loss Friday night.

Wells (4-1) posted his second win in five decisions against the Yankees since being traded to the Blue Jays for Roger Clemens last year. He allowed one run and five hits in five innings before leaving with slight lower back stiffness.

"I got a little tight, you know, I didn't want to chance it," Wells said. "One thing can lead to another."

Batista's double scored Brad Fullmer, who had singled with two out to start the Blue Jays three-run sixth off Orlando Hernandez (4-1). After Marty Cordova walked, Alex Gonzalez doubled to center to score Batista and Cordova.

"I threw everything I wanted to throw except that ball to Batista," Hernandez said. "I didn't have to give in to him but I made it too fat."

Hernandez was knocked out with one out in the seventh, matching his shortest outing of the season, when he gave up a leadoff single to Jose Cruz Jr. and a sacrifice bunt to Homer Bush.

"You get a little spoiled with El Duque. He had good stuff, he just wasn't getting it down," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "A lot of stuff was belt high."

Mike Stanton came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to Fullmer that made it 5-1.

Hernandez allowed five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Billy Koch got Scott Brosius to fly out with runners on first and second and two outs in the ninth for his fifth save.

Bernie Williams' RBI single gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Blue Jays tied it with an unearned run in fourth.

Raul Mondesi singled, stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, and scored on Carlos Delgado's groundout.

Felix Jose, called up from the minors and activated by the Yankees before the game, singled twice in his first two at bats for his first major league hits since 1995 before leaving with a slight strain of the left groin.

"I pulled something I've never pulled before," said Jose, who may be headed for the DL after only one game back in the majors.
