Big Mac sac fly deep enough for win

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals won on a long flyball that didn't leave the park.

Mark McGwire hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning Saturday night as the Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 despite blowing a four-run lead in the eighth inning.

Craig Paquette hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who have homered in 22 of 24 games and have 53 homers this month, a major league record for April. They need five homers Sunday to tie Baltimore's 1987 record of 58 homers in any month.

Fernando Vina led of the 10th inning with a single off Wayne Gomes (1-1) and advanced to second on a groundout. After Jim Edmonds hit an infield single, McGwire hit a drive to the warning track in right field to score the go-ahead run.

Mike Mohler (1-1) came on with runners on first and second and one out in the ninth and got five outs for the win.

The Phillies, who have lost 12 of their last 15 games, rallied to tie the game at 6 with four runs in the eighth inning.

Heathcliff Slocumb retired the first two batters before getting Bobby Abreu to hit a slow roller to third base. Fernando Tatis landed awkwardly when throwing to first base and Abreu reached on an infield single.

Tatis, who leads the Cardinals with 28 RBI, left the game with a strained left groin. He is day to day.

After Scott Rolen walked, Dave Veres came in and allowed an RBI single to Rico Brogna, a two-run double by Mike Lieberthal and a RBI double to Mickey Morandini to tie it.

Paquette had an RBI double in the fifth inning and scored on Eli Marrero's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. After Paquette's third homer made it 4-1, the Phillies drew within two on Morandini's RBI double.

St. Louis went ahead 6-2 in the eighth on an RBI double by McGwire and Tatis' sacrifice fly.

Andy Benes gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings but lost a chance for the win when Veres blew the game in the eighth. Benes struck out eight.

Wolf allowed four hits and four runs in seven innings. He struck out nine.

Game notes
Olympic runner Marion Jones, in Philadelphia for the Penn Relays, defeated the Phillie Phanatic in a dash between innings. ... Morandini's error in the eighth inning was just Philadelphia's eighth this season. ... St. Louis' J.D. Drew, already being mercilessly booed by Phillies fans for refusing to sign with the team, after getting drafted in 1997, added to fans' anger after a bat slipped out of his hands and hit a small girl in the stands. The girl, who left the seating area, was slightly shaken up but appeared unhurt.
