PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers didn't welcome their Monday night rainout against the Pittsburgh Pirates, even if they will have newly acquired center fielder Tom Goodwin for Tuesday's doubleheader. The Dodgers got the leadoff hitter they have sought for several weeks when they traded outfielder Todd Hollandsworth to Colorado for Goodwin, who began his career with the Dodgers in 1991. Goodwin, batting .271 with five homers, 47 RBI and 39 stolen bases, is expected to arrive for the doubleheader, the first of the season for both teams. Because of the rainout, the teams will play three games in less than 24 hours -- the Dodgers' last three in Three Rivers Stadium. They also play Wednesday afternoon. "It's no more than what we've been through already this season," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. "You could almost call this (Monday) a day off except we were here long enough to play." The Pirates were batting with two on and none out in the first inning of a scoreless tie when it began raining Monday. Play never resumed despite a nearly two-hour wait. Pittsburgh starter Jose Silva, who pitched a scoreless first inning, will be pushed back to Wednesday's game. Two rookies, left-hander Jimmy Anderson (3-5) and right-hander Bronson Arroyo (2-3), will start Tuesday. Carlos Perez (4-5) will start the first game for the Dodgers. Ismael Valdes (2-4), who was on the mound when it began raining, will pitch the second game. "He's anxious to start a new chapter," pitching coach Claude Osteen said of Valdes, reacquired last week from the Cubs. "He's very confident." Several Dodgers who questioned Valdes' mental toughness and attitude were clearly unhappy upon learning that Valdes was coming back. Gary Sheffield said he must return with a different, better attitude. "It was probably a little bit tough on him," Osteen said. "I'm sure he was a little nervous or had some butterflies. Coming back, he wanted to be good and, more than anything, he didn't want to make any mistakes." Johnson hopes Valdes can go five innings, even though the right-hander warmed up for 20 minutes Monday and also pitched part of the first inning. "He said he would be fine," Johnson said. "He probably won't be able to give us as much as we hoped for, but the only other option was to bring Darren Dreifort back on three days' rest and I don't want to do that." The Pirates also will have a new player Tuesday in Enrique Wilson, the infielder who was acquired Friday from Cleveland with outfielder Alex Ramirez for Wil Cordero. Wilson spent Sunday and Monday on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Nashville for a sprained wrist. Manager Gene Lamont said Wilson would play at least one game and possibly both, perhaps one at second base and one at shortstop. "We've got to see what he can do," Lamont said. Center fielder Brian Giles, who has started all 103 Pirates games and was in the lineup Monday, will sit for one game Tuesday. The Pirates got a discouraging report about right-hander Jason Schmidt, out since June 11 with rotator cuff inflammation. He tried throwing Monday at the Pirates' camp in Bradenton, Fla., but was forced to stop after four minutes. He will be re-examined later this week, and it is possible he might not pitch again this season. He had been expected to return in mid-August. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Los Angeles Clubhouse Pittsburgh Clubhouse RECAPS Baltimore 6 Minnesota 5
