Burks better off swinging away

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- When Ellis Burks led off the top of the 11th inning Monday night, he wanted to bunt.

He figured he had to get on base since San Francisco hadn't gotten a hit since the second inning.

But after missing a bunt try, he did something else. He homered off David Weathers to give the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

"I kind of had an idea he was going to come with a fastball there," Burks said. "He did, and I got good wood on it."

Weathers (3-4) knew he made a mistake.

"My fastball just came back over the middle and he hammered it," he said. "In the big leagues you can't throw a pitch like that and get away with it."

Milwaukee pitchers had retired 13 straight batters before Burks' 13th homer. He also had a two-run single earlier in the game.

Robb Nen got the final two outs for his 26th save and set a major league record for saves in July at 14, one shy of the record for any month.

Felix Rodriguez (4-1) pitched two hitless innings for the win.

At 19-8, the Giants tied their best record in July since moving west in 1958. They also finished 19-8 in 1994.

"If we get good pitching, you're not going to keep our guys down for long," said San Francisco manager Dusty Baker.

Geoff Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the Brewers, tying the score at 3. He also was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Jeromy Burnitz.

Jenkins' homer was the last hit for either team team until Burks' shot.

"You expect more hits from the beginning of the game, not just from that point," said Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes. "But the pitching just dominated. Good pitching will dominate good hitting any time. That's indicative of what happened for both sides."

San Francisco starter Mark Gardner went seven innings, allowing four hits and three runs. He got a no-decision, leaving his five-game winning streak intact.

"Confidence has a lot to do with how you pitch and right now, our pitching staff is real confident," Gardner said.

Milwaukee starter Jimmy Haynes pitched six innings and did not allow a hit over the last four. He struck out seven.

Bill Mueller and Barry Bonds singled in the Giants first, setting up Burks' two-run single. Burnitz had an RBI single in the bottom half.

Mueller drove in a run with a groundout in the second.

Ron Belliard opened the Brewers fifth with a triple that bounced out of the glove of Burks in right field before he hit the wall. With two outs, Jenkins hit his 18th homer.
