Wells' 10-win streak on road squashed

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- For the first time since last season, David Wells lost on the road. And he knows exactly why.

"Tonight we just stunk, starting with me making some bad pitches. Then it got contagious," Wells said Monday after the Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1.

Wells (16-4), who leads the majors in victories, had been 10-0 on the road this year. Overall, he had won 13 in a row away from SkyDome since Sept. 7, 1999, when he lost at Seattle.

Miguel Tejada and Adam Piatt homered as Oakland won its third straight game. Jason Giambi put the A's ahead to stay with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Wells, who went all eight innings, shouldered the responsibility.

"I threw the balls, I'm the one who started the mess," he said. "Sometimes you just have better luck on the road than at home. My next start's at home, so hopefully I can turn it around there."

A's starter Tim Hudson (12-3) went eight innings, allowing one run on just three hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Hudson has won 11 of his last 12 decisions.

"I love pitching in big games like this," Hudson said. "I like going against the best. "It kind of shows me where I am as a pitcher."

Wells gave up five earned runs and 12 hits. He walked two, and has walked only 24 this season.

The Blue Jays have won 19 of Wells' 23 starts this year.

Jim Mecir, acquired by the A's from Tampa Bay on Friday, made his first appearance for Oakland and pitched a scoreless ninth.

With the score tied at 1 in the fifth, Wells walked Ryan Christenson with one out. An out later, Giambi's double sailed to the fence in left-center, scoring Christenson easily.

The A's loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning against Wells. But Olmedo Saenz grounded to short and then stumbled and fell while running to first as the Blue Jays turned a double play.

Saenz, one of the A's most reliable right-handed bats, had to be helped off the field with a strained left hamstring. A's manager Art Howe said his status would be evaluated Tuesday, but it didn't look good.

"I feel it pretty bad," Saenz said. "It hurts."

With one out in the eighth, Ben Grieve singled and Tejada hit his 24th home run. Terrence Long followed with a double and scored on Eric Chavez's double. Chavez scored on Christenson's suicide squeeze.

Brad Fullmer hit a solo home run off Hudson in the second. It was 22nd homer.

The A's tied it at the bottom of the inning on Piatt's solo homer off Wells. All four of his home runs this season have come against left-handed pitchers.
