Williams climbs mountain to win on hill

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Woody Williams has made a successful return from surgery for an aneurysm under his right armpit.

Williams came within one out of his second career shutout and Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer to lift the San Diego Padres past the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 Monday night.

Williams (6-3), making his sixth start since coming off the disabled list, allowed four hits and lost the shutout when Pat Burrell homered with two outs in the ninth.

"I just wanted the win. It would have been nice to get a shutout but it just didn't happen," Williams said. "I'm just glad that I was able to finish what I started. That's my goal every time that I go out there and it's only happened three times in my career."

Nevin, who hit a game-winning ninth-inning homer Sunday against Pittsburgh, gave Williams all the support he would need with a two-run homer in the sixth off Bruce Chen (5-1).

Williams struck out four and walked two to improve to 3-1 in his last four starts.

"I promised that I wouldn't rush it, that I wouldn't come back before I was 100 percent," said Williams, who was sidelined two months. "Fortunately I came back quickly and things have worked out."

Williams pitched the Padres' first complete game since Sterling Hitchcock did so last Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh.

"Just watching him pitch since he came back from surgery is awesome with the mind frame that he has on the mound," Nevin said. "You can see the younger pitchers feeding off of him. He's really become a leader of the pitchers."

Chen, acquired three weeks ago in a trade for Andy Ashby, had retired 12 straight batters before walking Ryan Klesko with two outs in the sixth. Nevin then homered over the right-field wall, giving him six RBI in his last two games.

"It was down where I wanted it," Chen said. "It was a good pitch. He's just too strong. He extended his arms."

Eric Owens had an RBI triple in the eighth off Chris Brock, scoring Williams, and then scored on Ruben Rivera's single to make it 4-0.

Chen allowed two runs and four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. He is 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA in four starts since the trade.

"He was tremendous. Their guy was 'tremendous-er," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "I don't think Williams threw a ball in the middle of the plate all night."

Rivera struck out in his first three at-bats, giving him 34 strikeouts in his last 25 games.

Williams flew out to center fielder Doug Glanville with runners on second and third to end the second. Coming into the game, Williams had gone 7-for-10 since returning from the disabled list July 2.
