EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Stephon Marbury scored 18 points and made top draft pick Kenyon Martin look good late in leading the New Jersey Nets to an 88-82 victory over the Miami Heat in the preseason opener Wednesday night.

Martin, the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, was quiet most of the game before scoring six of his 11 points in the final 3:23 to give Byron Scott a win in his coaching debut.

Brian Grant was spectacular in his debut for the Heat with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Todd Fuller added 12 points for Miami, which played without center Alonzo Mourning, recently diagnosed with a kidney disorder that clouded his status for the season.

Kendall Gill and free agent Stephen Jackson added 14 points apiece for New Jersey, which fired Don Casey after missing the playoffs last season.

Both Scott and former mentor Pat Riley coached like this game meant something as they went with their regulars in the closing minutes with the game on the line.

After Miami's Eddie Jones tied the game at 76 with a baseline jumper, Marbury hit a 12-footer, found Martin underneath for a dunk, then hit two free throws to give New Jersey an 82-76 lead.

Miami cut the lead to four points twice, but Martin put in the rebound of Marbury's shot, then slammed another pass from Marbury to put the game away.
