The outlook
Cuban heavyweight Felix Savon, a four-time world champion,
is trying to become the third three-time Olympic champion. U.S.
boxers have not won more than one gold medal since they got three
in 1988 in Seoul. The United States and Cuba are the only countries
that will have full 12-boxer teams.
For the first time, boxers had
to qualify for the games in a series of tournaments in the
Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Cuba, as the world's
top-ranked team, didn't have to qualify.
The finer points
Scoring system: The score of each bout is determined by the number of scoring blows credited to each boxer. Five judges will score each fight using an electronic scoring system approved by the International Amateur Boxing Association. The system calculates the number of scoring blows awarded by at least three of five judges within a one-second window. A boxer also can win by knocking out his opponent or by having the referee stop the bout when one boxer is clearly winning.
Rules change: Fight duration changes to four two-minute rounds, with one-minute intervals. In Atlanta in 1996, fights were held for three three-minute rounds with a one-minute rest period between rounds.
Equipment: In amateur fights, boxers up to 148 pounds wear eight-ounce gloves; boxers over 148 wear 10-ounce gloves. Gloves have white markings to help judges record blows. Amateurs wear shorts and vests; pros wear only shorts.
