GAME LOG
CINCINNATI (AP) -- A day after the Atlanta Braves threw one away,
they went back to winning their usual way -- with pitching, defense
and resilience.
Rafael Furcal had another three-hit game and Andruw Jones and
Wally Joyner each drove in a pair of runs Tuesday night, leading
the Atlanta Braves to a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Mazzone leaves game
after fainting, falling
|

CINCINNATI -- Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone
fainted on the bench during the second inning of Tuesday's game and was taken to a hospital as a
precaution.
Mazzone, 51, fainted as the inning ended, slid from the bench
and landed on the dugout floor. He suffered a scrape on the left
side of his face and a bloody nose.
Players gathered around Mazzone as Dr. Joe Chandler and trainers
talked to him and examined his face after the fainting spell. The
game was delayed briefly before Mazzone got up and walked to the
tunnel that leads to the clubhouse, the left side of his face
bright red.
Manager Bobby Cox said Mazzone had worked out on a treadmill
before the game and felt weak because he hadn't eaten afterward.
"He said he hadn't eaten anything and I said, 'Why don't you go
into the clubhouse and get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?' The
next thing, I turn around and I heard a boom and he's on the
ground."
Cox said Mazzone was back to normal when he reached the
clubhouse, but he was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital as a
precaution. It's the same hospital where Reds bench coach Ken
Griffey Sr. was taken last Sunday, when he suffered chest pains
during a game.
Tests found nothing wrong with Griffey's heart and he was
released the next day.
Braves starter Andy Ashby was getting a drink of water in the
dugout when Mazzone fainted.
"Man, that's scary," Ashby said. "I haven't been here long
but it's a great bunch of guys. You get close to them in a hurry. I
hope he's OK."

Atlanta lost right fielder Brian Jordan, who strained groin
muscles while running out a grounder in the third and left for a
pinch-hitter two innings later.
"Just one of those days," Jordan said.
The Braves' pitching staff made sure it wouldn't be a losing day
as well.
Andy Ashby (8-8) drove in a run with a squeeze bunt as the
Braves went ahead 4-0 in the fourth, then withstood four one-run
rallies by the Reds. Ashby gave up nine hits, including Dmitri
Young's leadoff homer in the ninth, and Mike Remlinger got the
final three outs for his 11th save in 14 chances.
The Braves evened the series a day after third baseman Chipper
Jones made an errant two-out throw in the ninth that let Cincinnati
rally for a 3-2 win.
"Last night was a game we felt we should have won, but those
things happen," Remlinger said. "The good thing about this team
is that it doesn't dwell on things. That's one of the reasons why
we're able to be as good of a team as we are. We don't put that
kind of importance on one game."
The Reds lost for the sixth time in their last seven games and
added to their legacy of losing to the Braves. Atlanta is 25-6
against Cincinnati since 1997.
The Reds stranded six runners in scoring position and had
another thrown out at the plate as they failed to get more than one
run at a time against Ashby, who came to the Braves in a July 12
trade with Philadelphia.
Heading into the game, Ashby was 4-10 career with a 5.38 ERA
against the Reds, who didn't see much difference in him except the
uniform and the results.
"He's pretty much the same tough guy," manager Jack McKeon
said. "He's probably getting more runs and probably better
defense."
Furcal doubled and singled twice in his first three at-bats
against Elmer Dessens (5-2) for his third straight three-hit game.
The leadoff hitter is 9-for-14 over his last three games.
Furcal opened the game with a slug bunt that landed him on
third. He eased his top hand down the bat and slapped a liner over
the head of third baseman Chris Stynes for a double, then continued
to third when Young bobbled the ball in left for an error. Jones'
grounder made it 1-0.
Joyner had a sacrifice fly in the third and Atlanta stretched
the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on Ashby's squeeze bunt and Jones'
RBI single. Joyner added an RBI single in the seventh off Ron
Villone.
The Reds couldn't score more than one run at a time. Young
doubled home a run in the fourth, Ken Griffey Jr. had an RBI double
in the fifth and Sean Casey singled home a run in the sixth. Casey
had two singles in four at-bats against Ashby, leaving him 8-for-16
career with two homers off the right-hander.
First baseman Andres Galarraga was out of the Braves' lineup for
a second day. Galarraga, who missed last season with a cancerous
tumor in his back, had tests Monday to make sure the disease hasn't
returned.
Game notes
Chipper Jones went 0-for-5, leaving him in an 0-for-20
slump that is the longest of his career. He went 0-for-15 three
times in 1995 and once in '97. ... Reds SS Barry Larkin took
batting practice and fielded grounders for the first time since he
sprained a knee ligament last Friday night. He moved cautiously but
said he felt good. He could return during a weekend series in
Chicago. ... Young's ninth-inning homer broke Cincinnati's streak
of seven games without one, its longest streak since an eight-game
one in 1992. ... 3B Aaron Boone had reconstructive surgery Tuesday
for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He's
expected to be fully recovered by spring training. ... A banner in
right field said, "Griffey Who? Let's Go Andruw."
