GAME LOG
NEW YORK (AP) -- Jose Canseco didn't need to be a hero in his New
York Yankees debut. Bernie Williams and David Justice, once again,
filled that role.
Williams and Justice homered on the first two pitches from Jason
Isringhausen in the bottom of the ninth, giving the New York
Yankees a 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.
| | David Justice, right, was mobbed by his Yankees teammates after hitting a first-pitch, game-winning homer. |
"That's how it happens sometimes," Justice said. "He's
(Isringhausen) been successful this year, but with two pitches
... "
Williams led off the ninth with a drive to right for his 25th
homer. Justice followed with his 30th homer, sending the Yankees
pouring out of the dugout. New York holds a season-high 4½-game
lead over Boston and Toronto in the AL East.
Canseco, claimed off waivers by the Yankees on Monday, was warmly
received by the Yankee Stadium crowd before flying out as a
pinch-hitter to end the seventh with the bases loaded.
"It was a very positive reaction. Hopefully next time I get in,
I'll produce," Canseco said.
Manager Joe Torre, not pleased by Canseco's addition, figured
out a way to use the slugger.
"It's nice to have ammunition like that off the bench." Torre
said. "Everyone knows what he's capable of."
Isringhausen (5-4) blew his seventh save -- and second straight -- in 32 chances, spoiling a strong outing by rookie left-hander Barry Zito.
"I haven't been doing it too long, not even when I was starting
did I have that happen," Isringhausen said. "It's a shame,
because it's Barry's first year and first start at Yankee
Stadium."
Zito, a left-hander who kept the Yankees off-balance with
off-speed pitches, gave up two runs -- one earned -- and three hits
in 6 1/3 innings.
"It was easy to go out there and take in the whole thing
objectively," Zito said. "It was pretty amazing out there."
Mariano Rivera (6-3), who loaded the bases in the ninth before
getting Adam Piatt to fly out to end the inning, got the win.
The home runs helped the Yankees snap a three-game losing streak
and avoided giving Roger Clemens his first loss in nearly two
months.
"That was wonderful, I barely got my arm into ice," Clemens
said. "In the blink of an eye, it was over. It's a good win for
us, maybe it will jump-start us a bit."
Clemens, undefeated in nine starts since losing June 9 to the
Mets, retired the first 11 batters before running into trouble in
an odd fifth inning that featured an inside-the-park homer that
appeared to go over the center-field fence.
Jeremy Giambi walked with one out. Eric Chavez then hit a high
fly to center field. Williams, thinking the ball was out, was late
reacting. He got to the wall and leaped. Replays showed the ball
hit a barrier beyond the wall and ricocheted back onto the field.
Second base umpire Charlie Reliford ruled the ball was in play,
and Chavez scored easily. Ramon Hernandez followed with a line
homer to left, his 13th of the year, making it 3-1.
Clemens gave up three runs, five hits and four walks in seven
innings. It was only the second time in nine starts since his last
loss that Clemens gave up as many as three runs. But in the end, it
didn't matter.
Justice had an RBI single in the seventh, snapping the Yankees'
0-for-21 slump with men in scoring position.
Glenallen Hill greeted Jim Mecir with a double down the
left-field line, sending Justice to third. After an intentional
walk to Tino Martinez loaded the bases, Scott Brosius struck out,
bringing up pinch-hitter Jose Canseco for his Yankees' debut.
Game notes
The inside-the-park homer was the first by an opposing team
at Yankee Stadium since Milwaukee's David Hulse on Aug. 1, 1995.
... The A's have 11 back-to-back and two inside-the-park homers
this year. Ryan Christenson also did it, May 21 at Oakland against
Minnesota.
