WILKES-BARRE, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Roman Simicek scored twice and fellow rookie Sebastien Caron stopped 24 shots as the Pittsburgh Penguins posted a 4-2 exhibition victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Simicek snapped a scoreless tie with 54 seconds left in the first period before adding a power-play goal with 25 seconds left in the second for a 3-1 advantage. Both goals were set up by defenseman Janne Laukkanen. Rookie Tom Kostopoulos and Alexei Kovalev also scored for the Penguins, who evened their preseason record at 2-2. Battling for the backup goaltending spot, Caron played the entire game and posted his first preseason victory after dropping two decisions. He outdueled future Hall of Famer Patrick Roy, who made 31 saves. Alex Tanguay and Dan Hinote scored for the Avalanche, who were 1-for-10 with the man advantage. The teams combined for 70 penalty minutes in the first period, which featured three fights. Pittsburgh's Dennis Bonvie fought Chris Dingman 4 1/2 minutes into the game before being ejected late in the first period following a scrap with Scott Parker.
