HOUSTON (AP) -- Tina Thompson scored 25 points, including 14-of-16 shooting on free throws, as the Houston Comets defeated the Minnesota Lynx 77-64 Wednesday night. Houston (27-5) scored 27 points off a season-high 19 steals, and shot 26-for-31 from the free-throw line. Katie Smith had 22 points -- 14 in the first half -- and Betty Lennox added 20 points and eight rebounds for Minnesota (15-17). Sheryl Swoopes had 17 points for the Comets, and finished with a 20.7-point average to beat Smith (20.2) for the scoring title. The Lynx were in control for most of the first half, using a 15-2 run to take a 14-point lead with 5:13 remaining. However, the Comets responded with a 13-4 spurt to cut the deficit to 33-28 at halftime. Houston's run continued in the second half as the Comets scored the first eight points after the break until Minnesota finally scored after nearly five minutes had elapsed. The Lynx never regained the lead, as the Comets used runs of 10-2 and 15-4 to seal the victory. Houston's defensive effort overcame its 1-for-15 shooting on 3-pointers.
