AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Astou Ndiaye-Diatta scored 19 points and Wendy Palmer added 17 Wednesday night as the Detroit Shock closed the season with a 66-63 victory over the New York Liberty. The victory wasn't enough because Washington beat Cleveland earlier in the evening to clinch the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Shock and Mystics finished with identical 14-18 records, but Detroit lost all three meetings against Washington. New York's loss didn't mean anything either, as it won the East with a 21-11 record. Tari Phillips led the Liberty with 14 points. Detroit led 33-29 at halftime behind 14 points from Ndiaye-Diatta and 11 from Palmer, then increased the margin to 10 by scoring the first six points of the second half. The Shock led 49-42 when word reached the bench that Washington had won. The Liberty later went on a 9-0 run and tied the game at 57 on Crystal Robinson's 3-pointer with 4:10 left. Palmer made one of two free throws to give the Shock a 62-61 lead with 1:19 to go. Ndiaye-Diatta blocked Vickie Johnson's layup at the other end, and Elena Tornikidou increased the margin to three with a short jumper with 27 seconds remaining. After Teresa Weatherspoon's layup made it a one-point game, the Liberty fouled Tornikidou, who made both free throws.
