Galarraga's bat, glove lift Braves

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Terry Mulholland loves pitching for Atlanta. He doesn't have to strike everybody out or try to win the game on his own. He just has to pitch well, and his teammates will take care of the rest.

That plan worked perfectly Tuesday as the Braves beat Mulholland's old team, the Chicago Cubs, 5-2. Mulholland (5-4) gave up just two runs in eight innings, Andres Galarraga homered and had the defensive play of the game, and Javy Lopez drove in three runs.

Andres Galarraga slams a solo home run in he sixth inning Tuesday, helping the Braves beat the Cubs.

"It's great," Mulholland said. "If I get ground balls, these guys will field them. If I can go six, seven, eight innings, I feel they'll get enough runs for me."

John Rocker came close to blowing it for Mulholland, though. The controversial closer started the ninth and was greeted with a resounding chorus of boos. That was the biggest excitement in the first night game at Wrigley Field since the May 16 brawl between the Los Angeles Dodgers and some Cubs fans.

Rocker then created some more, loading the bases before being replaced by Mike Remlinger with two outs. Remlinger struck out pinch-hitter Henry Rodriguez for his fifth save.

"It took away a little bit from Terry's performance," Braves manager Bobby Cox said of the wild ninth. "Remlinger's been our savior. I like the way he's pitching."

Cubs starter Ruben Quevedo, acquired by Chicago as part of the trade for Mulholland last summer, ruined Mulholland's shutout bid with his first major league hit, an RBI single in the fifth.

"The only thing that crossed my mind was giving up the first big-league hit to a guy I was traded for," Mulholland said. "He did a number on my average."

But Quevedo (0-3), recalled from Triple-A Iowa, also gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings. The Cubs also committed four errors.

Joe Girardi hit a solo home run in the eighth for Chicago.

"We haven't been able to put things together," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. "With a club like Atlanta, you have to play good. You can't make errors. They take advantage of any mistake you make."

And even some you don't. After cutting Atlanta's lead to 2-1 in the fifth on Quevedo's single, the Cubs had a chance to tie the game after Eric Young's double gave them men on second and third with two outs. Joe Girardi hit a slow ball to the hole at shortstop, and looked as if he might beat Rafael Furcal's throw.

But Galarraga dove to his right, stretching out until he was nearly prone on the field. He somehow managed to keep the very tips of his toes on the bag and snagged the ball for the third out.

In the top of the sixth, Galarraga hit a solo homer to left-center, his 14th of the season. Brian Jordan then singled, scoring on Lopez's RBI double. Furcal rounded out the inning with an RBI fielder's choice.

Lopez also hit a two-run homer in the second inning.

Game notes
Cubs SS Jose Nieves left after the fifth with tightness in his left hamstring. He's listed as day to day. ... Sammy Sosa's son, Sammy Jr., went to work with dad Tuesday, and he's already got the routine down. The 3-year-old was blowing kisses and tapping his heart in the clubhouse. ... The Braves called up RHP Don Wengert before the game.
