LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Todd Pratt capped a six-run ninth inning with a pinch-hit grand slam as the New York Mets rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-5 Tuesday night for their fourth win in five games.

With Los Angeles ahead 5-4, Mike Piazza singled leading off the ninth against Jeff Shaw (2-3), who blew a save for the fifth time in 16 chances. Robin Ventura walked and Todd Zeile singled home the tying run.

Terry Adams relieved and struck out pinch-hitter Joe McEwing. Kurt Abbott then loaded the bases with a walk, Jon Nunnally struck out and Melvin Mora walked on a 3-2 pitch for a 6-5 lead.

Pratt, batting for John Franco (2-1), followed with his fifth homer of the season, the first grand slam of his career. It was the Mets' fifth slam of the year, the second by a pinch-hitter. Benny Agbayani did it March 30 in Tokyo to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1 in 11 innings.

The game lasted 4 hours, 9 minutes _ 13 minutes short of the major league record, set by the Yankees and Baltimore on Sept. 5, 1997, and matched by Milwaukee and the Chicago Cubs on May 11.

Los Angeles catcher Todd Hundley left in the sixth inning with a strained right hip after he went from first to third on Dave Hansen's broken-bat single.

One out later, pinch-hitter Geronimo Berroa tied it at 4 with a bloop single off Dennis Cook and Mark Grudzielanek put the Dodgers ahead with a single off Pat Mahomes.

The Dodgers nearly lost both of their catchers in one inning. Geronimo Berroa's foul line drive barely missed hitting Chad Kreuter in the head. Berroa, who bruised his left foot while fouling a pitch during that at-bat, was replaced on the bases by pitcher Carlos Perez, then was taken for X-rays.

Edgardo Alfonzo had three hits and three RBIs for the Mets, who played their first game since losing shortstop Rey Ordonez for six weeks with a broken bone in his left arm.

New York rallied from a 3-1 deficit on Piazza's RBI single in the fifth against Eric Gagne and Alfonzo's two-run single in the sixth off Herges. Alfonzo has 19 RBIs in his last 19 games.

Pitching on six days' rest, Eric Gagne allowed two runs and six hits in four-plus innings. The rookie right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth after walking three batters. But the Mets chased him in the sixth on Piazza's RBI single, his 20th RBI in 23 games.

Notes: Orel Hershiser, who hadn't pitched for the Dodgers since May 9 and asked to be optioned to the minors to get in some competitive work, allowed an unearned run and four hits over six innings for Class-A San Bernardino Tuesday night in a no-decision against Lancaster. ... Monday was the 10th anniversary of the day Dodgers manager Davey Johnson was fired as Mets manager. ... Johnson's won-lost record against the Mets is 21-22. His .588 winning percentage in New York is still the highest among the 16 managers in Mets history _ 38 points higher than Bobby Valentine's. The only current Met who played for Johnson in New York is reliever John Franco.
