The Big West is on the verge of a massive transition. The football schools of the East Division are openly courting entrance into the Western Athletic Conference and the Sun Belt Conference. League commissioner Dennis Farrell stoked the fire by saying that he could see the league no longer sponsoring football by the end of the 2001 season. The East Division schools aren't going to give up football, so either they will continue with the Big West in all other sports (very unlikely) or look to go somewhere else. There's a better-than-even chance that the Big West will be an all-California entity in July of 2002.
The league tournament will be played in Reno even though the Wolf Pack has already declared its intention to leave the conference after this season. The city of Reno decided it wanted to play host to the event so it could show its new conference -- the WAC -- that it could run a quality tournament.
One year after having the Los Angeles Clippers use their No. 1 pick on Pacific's Michael Olowokandi, the Big West had only one player drafted: Boise State's Roberto Bergersen. The Atlanta Hawks picked him late in the second round and promptly traded him to Portland.
Getting road wins in the league isn't easy. Last season, only three teams (Boise State, New Mexico State and UCSB) finished with winning records on the road. It isn't a coincidence that all three teams tied for the best conference record overall (12-4).
